Just in case I don't feel cool enough with my manual I have a sticker to look at now... Can't tell if I like it , never been a fan of stickers but with it being white and placed in the dead space of where the heated seat thing would be I feel it fits..

this is a great thread because all I can say and this is FACT FACT FACT there is no use for an automatic four wheel drive if you dont have a standard trans in a four wjhell drive then you might as well be driving a 2 wheel drive and this comes from driving manual four wheel drives all my life and i mean trucks I not sure I even know how to drive a car I know I cant see anything in them they sit to low to ground

I agree, in a car you're down there close to the road kill.

Am I the only one who wishes tacoma's had low range 2wd and 4wd? Man that would be handy crawling around with a heavy load on the trailer or for backing up or hitching and unhitching the trailer, especially on black top.

I agree. Back in the old days I used 2wd low range on my F250 by not locking the hubs. I did not use 1st gear in 2wd, too easy to break something.

    Isn't there a hack to allow 2-LO?

This sounds like the transmission sticking in gear problem to me. There's a quick and easy TDB to solve that part of your problem. Do a search for 'manual transmission sticking' and you'll find a lengthy thread where you can read all about it. It's a pretty common problem with our transmissions that was only recently addressed by Toyota.

Update: here you go. I found it for you.

I would love to hear from others here. I've driven manuals for years and have never experienced clutch slip or clutch smell. I've got a 2016 with about 8k miles on it. On 3 occasions in 4 and 4Lo, I've had a crazy clutch burning smell - once when pulling a boat out of a lake in 4High, once in 4H when trying to back over a large rock, and in 4LO on a hill. Took it to the dealer and they claimed everything was fine and offered no explanation. The smell was unbelievably bad. When towing a 3k boat through the mountains and downshifting in 2LO I had no problems and no smell. Any insight?

Yeah but when your center of gravity is that low the handling is so sweet... and a manual and it's the best!!

Right on, thanks for finding this... I wasn't searching for sticking but rather clutch issues. Much appreciated, sounds like my issue (other than the clutch smell).

I agree, that it wouldn't have anything to do with the clutch smell. I hope you get it all figured out.

I was 1500 miles from home in the middle of a 3500 mile road trip when my transmission started sticking. It almost got my family killed. It wasn't pleasant. At that time, they didn't have a fix for it and weren't even admitting that there was an issue. It's a stupid-easy fix now. Just a bolt, detent pin, and spring. They don't even have to drop the transmission.

It's because the autos have the Multi terrain select in that location I believe.

I thought it was just the Off Road slushboxes that don't get the sunglasses pocket because of the CC/MTS.

Correct, it is where the CRAWL control would be if it were an OR auto

Being able to use low range in 2WD:

The last vehicle I owned that had that capability was a 60's IH truck. I only used the feature on a few occasions, but I didn't have a trailer in that era.

I do recall that the owner's manual reminded the operator to use restraint on the throttle since none of the drive force would be shared with the front axle.
