RIP best Taco config.

 

You'll have to search around, you can still find a 2017 SR 4x4, 4 banger w/MT... I found one in Dec '17 and pulled a quick trigger.

My 2010 Taco was a 2.7 with a 5 speed - Sold it to a co-worker and bought a 2016 Sport with a 6 speed. Big problem is power/economy ratio. I get better mileage with the 3.5 than I did with the 2.7 and have a LOT more power. So what's the point? - Clay

 

Am very please with my Sport (it was the best Taco I could buy at the time with a manual, my goal)
Wanted an O.R....However Toyota wanted those to have slush-boxes to go along with Crawl Control. Clay

 

Right on. I would have liked the factory locker and other OR bits in an MT AC. Oh well. I'm stoked otherwise.

 

How is that possible? You had to have been getting 23+ on the highway with the 4 banger. I know I was in my '95. I'm lucky to get 19 MPG in my 3.5L.

 

I concur, my 3.5 gets very close to the same gas mileage as my 2.7.

 

My point was the 3.5L does significantly worse.

 

I wish the sport had the rear locker as well. But, that’s life and I still have not come anywhere off-road where 4lo couldn’t get me out.

Why does everybody love that 5 speed? Only thing I can think of is those who don’t tow and want to do everything else

 

My O.R. is manual. Has A-trac instead of crawl control and still has the rear locker.

 

It doesn't. I've owned both and fuel mileage is very close to the same. If I drive my new 3.5 conservitively I can get better fuel economy than my '12 2.7.

 

Bingo. That's the light, nimble Tacoma that does it all (except tow). If I was hell bent on towing I'd get a full size truck anyway.

 

Depends on what your towing. I tow a TT at around 4,000 lbs and 20 ft and no way am I going to go ful size. Kind of like killing a fly with a sledge hammer.

 

I think 4000 exceeds the 4 cylinders rating, if I am not mistaken the 4 cylinder is 3500.

 

Anyone else hate how tall our reverse gear is in the 3rd Gen? I was trying to get a bed full of firewood backed up a fairly steep driveway last week and couldn't do it. I was starting to have to ride the clutch and I gave up, drove around the block and went around the house in 1st gear. This drives me crazy. Shouldn't a pickup truck have reverse geared lower than first?

 

Yes I don't care for the strange Reverse Gearing either, selecting 4 wheel drive can help as long as there are no sharp turns.

 

I hope that someone can someday create a 2Lo mod and maybe even change the 4Lo engagement requirements a bit so that it can drop in easier. Moving at 5mph to 10mph, clutch in should be fine.

 

Yeah we all pretty much beef on this. I feel like I could go 30 in reverse easily.

I'm thinking like 65mph. It's crazy taller than 1st! Almost worth re-gearing the truck just for a low R gear!
