for brake assist issue i've found if you don't the press the brake as hard when coming to a stop it won't assist you...when i have to stop on a hill i let the truck naturally slow itself to a stop and usually i can get to the light just as it turns green or hold the brakes without a lot of pressure... give it a shot man never know...also had the 10k done yesterday and asked about Ujoints and the updated tune and the guys looked at me like a d*ck was growing out of my forehead

I would like a basic stripper with an MT. Life is just not like that anymore. I have even more reason to hate Audis now that they are dropping the MTs out of a couple more models.

We gotta be happy with what we can get. But yeah, I was stoked to get a 2017 compared with the gizmos on the 2018s.

You wishes are entirely fulfilled with my old motorcycle. Simple EFI that I can check and setup in my garage, single cable throttle, and NO ABS! I get about 40mpg ripping around on it in the commute and around 50mpg when riding it like I stole it on trips. It's got over 100k on it and when it finally eats it, I will replace it with a VFR800. Basically the same.

I'm 45 and like it for the fact that it saves clutch life no matter how good you are at driving MTs. There is a stat somewhere about how much more power it takes to get moving from a dead stop versus rolling just a bit. If I am remembering correctly, it was a factor of 1,000 or something like that. Now add a bit of roll back to resist. . .

I'm a cheap ass and would not go searching for a hill start feature, I was puzzled by it initially on the Taco, but have grown to understand and like it. I coast backwards daily and am not upset about the couple of wasted seconds. It's kind of like not being pissed that I wasted a second or two coming to a full stop at stop signs. . .

Edit: Sorry, here is the ECU update thread for MTs:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/

There as been one instance of a semi-bricked ECU, so follow the instructions on the last few pages carefully. Even after the report, I would still do it again at home. Should more updates come out, I will buy my own Tactrix cable.

I feel calling hill assist "nanny BS" is like calling cruise control nanny BS. It's merely an aid... an aid you have the option of not using by not depressing the brake. Feather the clutch and gas if you want a challenge.

For those of you who miss your old beater MTs, I was like you once. I didn't need the "nanny" crap either. But actually spend an entire day driving an old truck, you'll be overjoyed to get back in your Tacoma.

Out of curiosity, why do you choose to drive an MT?

I can also assure you I know how to drive and have no bad habits. Nothing wrong with coasting a few feet into a parking spot or while changing directions on a slope.

Have you checked the 5.29 mega thread? The AT with 5.29 gears has almost the same final drives accross the board as an MT with 4.88s. very low gearing overall.

Now why would I do that? I'm satisfied with how my truck runs and tows.

That's not a nanny as I can choose to not use it. It has a mechanical throttle, It does not have rev matching, hill assist or exhaust modulation, and traction and stability controls can be turned on or off independently of each other. So I can chose my level of assist or drive assist free (which I often do). I can drift, burn rubber, and do donuts all day if I want to

Awesome. Glad to hear you love your truck the way it is. I'm still trying to get mine to a state where i love it. Hopefully the dealer dies my ECU update tomorrow. That will be aa huge help.

Old school assist free eh? Power steering? Power brakes?

My 65 is what you might call primitive. No air conditioning, no power steering, mechanical clutch linkage, mechanical throttle linkage. My wife can literally not drive it because she isn't strong enough. 4 on the floor. I've got headlights, a heater, and a radio. Even my wipers are on or off... I can't set them to intermittent. I DID convert to power disk brakes, but that's because the 350 is heavy and I need to stop. My truck also has a carburetor so I have to let it warm up before I can drive, or else it'll try to die at the stop sign. Do you remember when vehicles had manual choke cables? Probably not.

I swear I'm not trying to start a dick measuring contest with you. Just illustrating a point: your 2012 Camaro is full of what you call nanny features (because they can't be turned off). In reality, they were added into vehicles to enhance the driving experience and have become so standard people forget there was a time they didn't exist.

My point is this: you don't like the hill assist. Fair enough. I appreciate that. And you don't have to use it... don't touch the brakes. But NOBODY on this site can be upset about driver assistance features when you've been using them since at LEAST the late 1970s.

You've already sold your soul to the devil, ladies and gentlemen. There's no going back, and no reason to get upset about it.

    Hahahahahahaha yes, you get it!

My great great Uncle Paul turns 100 in October... sharp as a tack. Likes to say, "we call em the good old days, but I'm not sure why."

My dimmer switch is on the floor, for goodness sake.

Too right! It's funny how the good times stick in your head and the tough patches are quickly forgotten.

    Evolution! :transformer:

Regardless. I am still stoked that we can get a top spec model with an MT these days. When I flipped from searching used Tacos to new ones, I really thought the MT was only on the 4cyl.

Amen, brother. If it wasn't for the MT, I'd have needed to buy a different vehicle.

Exactly. That was why I was cross-shopping two-door Jeeps. Used prices on those were crazy also. In the end with the MT Taco, utility and reliability easily won.
