Thanks for the advice. I hadnt really been in any emergency stop situations in a manual transmission before.

I had the SR last November with the 2.7L and I loved the way the 5 speed manual shifted.

Traded it in for a TRD Sport. I'm not as big a fan of the 6 speed manual. Just doesn't feel right to me. Oh well. So far no sticking in gear and I have about 2,200 miles on it.

After a month at the dealer, just got mine back this last weekend...
Turns out all they changed was the (shifter lever/bushing/lock ball/pin/gasket).
Still testing it out but haven't taken it on long trips (30 mi+).
As far as for the rental I was given a 2016 DCLB SR5 AT... it sure was extremely sluggish compared to the MT!!!

So true. Those older Toyota manuals (like the R155 you had) feel more solid. Sure they're notchy, have long throws with shifters about 10 feet long, but we aren't driving Porsches here. The RA60 is OK but just feels kind of vague. Now I'm coming from a 300,000 mile old W56 that literally fell into gear with almost no effort so it could also just be that I'm not used to a low mileage transmission. But I wasn't gentle on that old transmission and it never complained or stuck in gear even after who knows how many 1st/reverse stuck in snow rocking sessions and jams-into-gear coming up on obstacles off highway.

new to this thread, just stumbled on it actually, and read a partial of it. But matter of fact when i think about it, my 6th gear did get a little sticky today on my drive today. I noticed I'd have to push the throttle further right to downshift into 5th or throw it into neutral. It did get stuck though. I figured since my truck is practically brand new with 500miles on it, thats probably the reason.

You tranny is fine, the problem is it literally is "STUCK" you can ram rod as hard as you want at the shifter but it doesn't move.

My dealer worked with Toyota engineers and determined it was transmission. This is all the detail i have. A new transmission is coming out of california to texas in about 7 days. I should have the truck back ~ july 25. Hopefully this will fix it, crossing fingers. This process took 6 visits, 2 ride alongs, and way way too much of my time

Hey guys, I've been considering swapping out my current full-size truck for a new Tacoma with the manual trans, and came across this thread. I've read it start to finish, now. It definitely has me concerned a bit, but I registered to let you guys know something you're overlooking regarding Toyota taking action on fixing the issue if you're in the US. Don't only contact your dealer, or Toyota Corporate. Call up the NHTSA and report the issue to them, along with a link to this thread and/or any other information you can get from around the web and from each other. Dealer visits, phone calls, responses from Toyota, repair orders, claim numbers... Anything. With enough people contacting them, they'll look into the issue and, if they can determine that it exists, will force Toyota's hand to acknowledge it and offer a fix. If you're unable to shift gears while on the road, this is a serious safety issue. Call them up, and/or report the issues online here (I apologize if outside links aren't welcome here, but I hope it'll be allowed for this purpose):

I currently own a Dodge that was affected by the buyback/recall involving the rear pinion potentially seizing (which had no fix for YEARS), so I'm not exactly a stranger to the subject.

It seems as if Toyota is not putting our problems as a common problem everyone is being cased individually, probably so they don't have to do tsb etc...

Wow. Since you've owned both, how would you compare the 2.7 and 3.5? Sounds like you're fine going back to the 2.7

I've driven them both, the 2.7L and the 3.5L both in Manual, and the 4.0L in a manual.

To tell you the truth. The way Toyota has configured the manual transmission in only 4 Models (SR 2.7L, TRD Sport AC/DCSB 3.5L, TRD OR DCSB 3.5L) it's not worth the price difference of $6,495.00.

It's completely stupid how Toyota didn't offer a 3.5L AC TRD OR, but offered a TRD Sport AC.

Why would you waste $6495 on the same 4x4 capabilites in a TRD Sport vs SR? Just plain stupid.

The 2.7L 5MT is the best value hands down, and is incredibly reliable, transmission and all.

Like I said, I've driven them all in the manual transmission and the power of that 2.7L, which loves to Redline by the way, is fun to drive the piss out of.

I just can't justify the extra expense for some stupid Cosmetics, better head unit, Qi wireless, seats, and HP/TQ, while having same 4x4 capabilites. Comparing AC to AC.

    2.7L 5MT FTW!!!!!!!!! 2.7L 5MT FTW!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU for your honest thoughts. This is super valuable to me. I'm shopping for a MT and the ONLY reason I'm considering the Sport is because it's the only V6 MT AC package available. The Sport "upgrades" (other than V6) are really meaningless to me. And I don't care for the 17s/scoop at all. And I agree that the price jump is ridiculous. Maybe they should have offered an SR5 V6 6MT option.

Depends on what you will use it for? I pull/tow nothing and use it as my daily driver. I've had the TRD Sport now for 7 months and have only put 2,100 miles on it.

I've tried both and the smaller engine is just fine. I'll level the 2017 SR and make a few modifications and save some money.

I don't tow either. Mostly city/mixed use, plus some road trips, mountains/snow and occasional trails. Sounds like the 2.7L could be the smarter choice.

Talk to you the other day when I was coming back from Florida I noticed it. Was very hot today 99,° seems like that's when transmissions stick was on my way home from work at about the 18 mile mark on a 23 mile trip noticed that didn't want to downshift easily call dealer right away brought it to him we went for a drive he said he cannot feel anything the whole way there even up to the light before the dealership 1/8 Mile it was doing it. I set there and drove with him and when he downshifted I said did you feel anything resistance in the shifter not just slide into gear he said no. When I left the dealership and was almost home about 10 miles felt it again this is ridiculous
