All you guys with manual transmissions with gear sticking issue. I would actually like to know how you drive them .Do you drive them push the clutch in slow shift slow let the clutch out slow ,or do you drive like me quick quick quick. Just trying to look at it at a diagnosis standpoint.

I can shift slow or quick, no sticking here yet. Only at 5300 miles though.

I tend to make 1st to 2nd a slower shift (otherwise i get some lurching pushing in the clutch too fast and the RPMs take a tad longer to end up in the right place between 1st and 2nd). But, say 5th to 6th? Real quick, no sticking issues.

Well my truck was built during the beginning of the year. Dcsb Trdof with almost 3000 miles. I have owned the truck for 2 months and have only noticed it on a 4 hour drive. I have been on an hour drive and completely fine. I would say cruise control 6th gear for more than 10 min is what really dos it for me. Thought it was normal for a new truck, but then I just ran across this extremely disappointing thread. Haven't talked to my dealer yet

Also this may be a dumb question but does your shifter swivel ? Is that normal like the actual shift knob and shaft going to the gear box . I could almost turn it around if I tried

On boy. This thread does make me a bit nervous. I have a ORDC with an M/T on order with my dealer. Will probably be a 2017 model, not that it will make much difference.
All I can do is drive it and hope I don't have the same problem. You guys are right on to say that this is a serious safety issue!

I won't screw around. If I can't shift out of a gear, the truck will be right back at the dealer and my money back in my pocket!

Mine hasn't gotten "stuck" but after some driving on the highway today (90+ degree temp) I noticed I had to exert some more effort to get it out of gear.

Typically I haven't noticed any issues around town, but this sounds roughly correct. I typically don't do a lot of highway driving, but I will keep my eye on this thread for any potential news about a TSB, etc.

See some of you are having some issues with getting stuck in gear but has anyone had trouble getting into gear?

At a dead stop sometimes I can't get into first gear. All other gears are fine and am forced to start in second. This happened twice today and about 5-7 times total. 5,500 miles

It scared me too I backed out on my order for a 2016 sport AC/MT. I seen this thread and called and cancelled the Inferno.. Big let down almost depressing, I have been wanting a v6 for a long time. In wv hardly any dealers get allotted Manual trannies so i never got one..so that Inferno color made me in truck love again. I hope the 2017 will have solved the issue.. now waiting on the msrp for 2017 to come out so i can get it ordered..

I think that's common. No need to start in 2nd. Just clutch out clutch in again real quick in neutral and you'll be able to get into 1st.

I don't know what causes it. It has only happened to me a few times.

I've owned manual's my whole life. Been riding motorcycles since I was 13 (38 now). I've gone through 1999 honda civic, 2000 Bmw 323, 1976 Bmw 2002, 1999 Bmw m3, 2004 lexus is300. Never replaced the clutch on any of the cars and never have had issues. I get a buy/sell a motorcycle about every 24 months too. My wife says I drive my manual cars more smooth than her automatic. I enjoy controlling the power band of vehicles as only know what is ahead.

I originally test drove a 2016 SR5 V6 Automatic as my friends said I should get an automatic. I hated it, it was lagging in acceleration and slow on freeway onramps. If you pressed the ECT/Power button it seemed OK. Because of that and my love for manual transmission I located and purchased the 2016 TRD OR DC M/T.

I enjoyed it up until 872 miles. I hardly drive the truck. I use it for work but my work is 2 miles away and i'm either on the harley or bicycle. But at 872 miles I was running errands and driving the truck around town for over an hour. I got onto the highway and was shifting between 5th and 6th gears and suddenly when shifting from 5th back up to 6th I couldnt pull the shifter out of gear. I was rev'd matched, I double clutched, and it felt like I was trying to shift without even having the clutch engaged. After a few tugs it shifted out of gear into neutral then was all floppy. I exited the freeway and downshifted through the gears to slow down, as I neared the stop light i was in 3rd gear and it had turned green and I was below RPM so I pressed in the clutch and went to downshift to 2nd and totally was LOCKED. It was worse than 5th to 6th. People behind me honked because I was not moving. I yanked at the shifter and gave it some constant pressure and still nothing finally after doing this a few times it released and things went back to normal.

I reported this to my dealer and they could not reproduce. It happened again a few weeks later (remember I hardly drive the vehicle) and this time only on a short 25 minute drive on the highway and it got stuck between 5th and 6th.

I took to dealer again and they could not reproduce.

It happened again a while later and I left the truck with the dealer over an extended weekend when I was out of town and one of their service guys took it home and drove it over the weekend. Again, they could not reproduce.

I got the truck back and then it happened again. I drove to the dealer and did a ride along with one of their service tech's but it was rush hour and we just sat in traffic.

I left the truck with the dealership yet again over a weekend and they were unable to duplicate.

The day before my scheduled oil change and 3 month mark (I only had 2100 miles on truck at this point), it happened again. I called my service manager and he added it to the list of things to check at the oil change. They checked the tranny oil level and it was fine, they also checked for metal shavings and there were none. They gave the truck back to me and said they could not reproduce.

At this point, I already had a case open with Toyota Corporate as the dealership still had not opened a case. I talked to Corporate and they wanted me to do another ride along.

So to re-cap here, the truck has been in the shop 5 times now, the dealership has had it over two extended weekends and put over 400 miles on the truck (basically 20% of the entire mileage) and unable to duplicate.

I have not allowed my wife to drive the truck because of my fear of her life. If this happens to her while she is driving she might not be able to pull it out of the stuck gear, and most likely be fighting with it to pull it out of gear and get into a deadly crash.

I have spent so much time at the dealership for this issue and skipped out of work early it took some time to get back over to the dealership for a scheduled ride along. Finally I had to run an errand and left work and went though a hilly area and the issue happened 5 times over 9.6 miles, where I was averaging 30-40 miles per hour.

I called the dealer and took a 1/2 day off the next day from work. I picked up the Service Manager and took him on that exact same route as the day before. I drove, to give him a sense of how I shifted and worked smoothly through gears and did not bog down the truck and on that ride the issue happened about 3-4 times. I was able to anticipate it happening 2 of the times and let him shift the gear from the passenger seat. We returned to the dealership and they gave me a loaner car, and my truck has been sitting on their lot since 7/8/2016.

The dealership called me, I think the following Tuesday or Wednesday and said they have been in contact with Toyota Engineers, I said thanks. They followed up the next day and said they want to replace my entire transmission.... WTF !!!!!!!

So now I'm extremely upset. I have a brand new vehicle, the first new vehicle I've ever purchased and had very high expectations for it. Now it's going to have a replaced transmission. I dont know about you but if I was going to buy a truck and someone said "oh yeah, the factory transmission has been replaced" I would run and run away fast.

I told both the dealership and Corporate that I do not want the truck. I've had it for 3 months, I put 2000 miles on it and the dealership put 400 miles on it. It's been in the shop 6+ times for this issue, and the dealership has had it in their possession 21 and counting...

    What would you do?

I'm thinking get rid of the truck, but i need a truck. There is no telling if the replaced transmission has a fix, and on top of that, who wants a brand new truck with a secondary transmission? I've spent way way too much time and effort on this issue and am pretty much done. The only solution I see is Toyota offer me a full refund plus TTL or maybe the same truck in Automatic

Trade it in for a 2017 SR M/T and be happy? I'm considering this myself.

Those of you having trouble with your transmissions, you might want to send a sample of the transmission lubricant out for analysis to see if the results will add to your argument(s) with Toyota. I did and received some concerning information. I'm not sure where the silicon is coming from, but I know some aluminum alloys used for casting contain a fair amount of silicon. I have quoted the narrative from the oil analysis below.

"Check for possible source of ABRASIVES entry (such as faulty filter elements, housings, seals, breathers, fill points, etc).
Abrasives (Silicon)are at a SIGNIFICANT level; Viscosity is MODERATELY LOW. Causes include contamination, incorrectly
identified viscosity grade, or adding a different viscosity grade to the component. Lubricant change acknowledged. Your note
    was taken into consideration."

If that is your only issue with the truck, I'd get the new transmission. You'll probably lose 4-6k in trade in right now. Might as well take the free transmission and enjoy the truck it should be. It is a warranty repair. Might hurt a low mileage private sale, but shouldn't hurt a high mileage private too much. I wouldnt think it would hurt a dealer trade or private sale more than what you'd lose by trading in.

Toyota is fulfilling their obligation by replacing it under warranty so I see little chance of a buy back, lemon case or full vehicle replacement unless it doesn't fix it or they decide to be extra nice.

I have a manual with no real issues, you will enjoy it when you have one too.

Don't mention that your Tacoma's issues may risk someone's life on here. Fanboy admins have been known to delete threads and posts when someone mentions lives in danger because of their Tacoma.

I've got just over 1000 miles on my M/T at this point and just completed a 400 mile trip, mostly on the highway in 90 degree weather with no issues with sticking. I did have trouble getting into 1st gear from a stop a couple times but other than that no other issues.
