No. Much longer. Mine has done it three times. Each time was after 4 or 5 hours at highway speed. That's why they can't (won't) diagnose mine. They don't want to pay a tech an hourly rate to drive my truck for 4 or 5 hours. Part of me can't blame them. There are enough people with the problem that a fix will come out and I'll get mine fixed without the dealership ever actually replicating the problem. Most of the people that have this issue have it happen without having to drive it nearly as far so it's only a matter of time.

It howls like a banshee. I can hear it at all speeds under light throttle but it's loudest between 50 and 55 mph. A lot of the guys with TRD Off-Road models are having the same problem.

After much persistence I finally got somewhere with the dealership. They carried out TSB-0088-16. We will see if they is a permanent fix to the issue I was having. I don't know how they diagnosed it in .6 miles though. Probably just got tired of me coming in about it.

Let us known if it fixes your issue.

Mine's in the process of getting done as well, same TSB (I believe I was the first to post the actual #). I should have it back tomorrow evening. I am heading on vacation on Saturday, so I am probably not going to be able to get my truck out in the conditions that causes the problem until I get back.

To those that have this issue, do you notice that 5th and 6th start to get harder to shift out of in the minutes prior to actually locking up? I kept an eye on the clock with mine. It took 30 minutes on the highway to lock up, but at 25 minutes my shifting required more effort and didn't feel as smooth as when the truck is cold. Once I start feeling that, I know it's only a matter of time before it locks. I also noticed that if I was driving in stop and go traffic, the more effort came into play even though I wasn't in gear long enough for the lock-up feeling.

I emailed Toyota with my concerns over my transmission.

My truck also attempted to move forward very slowly if I push the shifter towards first.

    Yes. The clutch is depressed.

It's like the synchros are moving the truck. It isn't HARD to shift like a failing slave or not fully disengaged clutch would be (had a failing slave on my Ranger for months, and had major issues getting into and out of gear)

Thank you for posting that TSB. I really put the pressure on after having that as ammo.

The first time mine had an issue I was in 4th for about 20 minutes and had an issue in 6th shortly after.

The second time I was only in 5th for about 5 minutes after a 30 minute stop and go session.

Hopefully I will test it this weekend. Luckily I still have the rock solid paradise blue 95 Tacoma to make the work commute during the week.

I sure would like to see the pdf of that TSB but can't find it anywhere.

Anyone that posts a copy would immediately become my personal hero.

So, I just got my truck back tonight with this TSB performed. This is my personal experience ONLY, so your mileage may vary...and mine may as well in the coming weeks.

On days hotter than 80-85 degrees at 25 minutes of driving the shift out of 5th and out of 6th became more difficult than when the truck was cold, but did NOT lock in gear. At 30 minutes, the truck would lock in gear.

I ran my truck for approximately 20 minutes around town in 75-77 degree weather and it operated normally (as expected). I then went on the highway for approximately 10-15 minutes and approximately 8-10 miles. From the time I was in 6th gear I did not take it out. In the past this would initiate the difficult shift. The truck came out of gear like it was cold.

After a 20 minute cool down period at the mall I again drove 20-25 minutes on the highway in 6th gear and had no issue whatsoever.

That being said, I do not know if the ambient temperature was higher if I would see the same issue. I can tell you after 40 minutes or so, my truck would lock up in 4th, 5th and 6th and my around town driving today (which was never 40 minutes straight, unfortunately) did not cause any issue as far as the truck being difficult to shift.

While I'm hesitant to say my truck is 100% cured because of the lack of high ambient temperature conditions, I'm willing to say that there is a good chance this solves our issues (or at least pushes out the time it takes for them to happen).

After about 100 miles I have still not experienced the same issue that I had before the performed the TSB.

Unfortunately due to some bay area traffic I have yet to put any extended constant speed highway miles on the truck. Plus the weather that seemed to play a factor in the issue has been unseasonably cool this past week.

I will say that the disengagement of higher gears (4th, 5th, and 6th) does feel smoother than before.

Thank you for keeping us up to date. My differential is getting replaced tomorrow and I'll ask the service guys about this TSB. I'd still kill to get a copy of the TSB itself as proof that it exists. I've tried to find a copy and can't even verify that it exists.

I've been keeping an eye on the Alldata repair website with a login my buddy gave me. Once I see that they posted TSB I'll put it up here if no one has already.

I wonder if there is a way to find out if your truck needs the TSB based on build date.
My build date was 7/8 and does not show any of the symptoms mentioned.
Clearly I have been paying attention to this thread even before I took delivery two weeks ago.
    Lastly,
sorry for you guys that had the problems but thanks for your hard work and diligence if mine does develop any symptoms the fix should be readily available
