My first 2 threads on Tacoma World was asking questions about specific trucks that I was looking at purchasing. You guys helped a ton. Well I finally got my Tacoma. It was not exactly the truck I was looking for but close enough. I purchased an 08 DCSB TRD Offorad with a manual transmission. Pretty high milage at 190,000 but it was a one owner that put a lot of highway miles on it and I have all the service records so I am pretty happy with it.
Now the question. I have driven quite a few trucks with Manual transmissions but I this is the first one that seems to stay at high RPM's between shifts. Especially in the middle gears it seems. If I change gears at 2,000 RPM's the engine idle seems to stay very high for an extented period of time before the RPM's slow down. Almost sounds like an old Ford with a stuck automatic choke. Is this normal?
It doesn't do this if I "slip shift" it not using the clutch. Only does it when the clutch is depressed.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is normal on these trucks. Annoying, but normal.

Almost all of us use the services of @JustDSM. For a very reasonable fee you get remote tuning via email (or mailing in your ecu) customized to your truck and your needs.

Yes, another (unfortunate) vote for normal.
Highly annoying, and at times makes it appear you don’t know how to drive, but normal.

Many people say tune will help.
I’m looking into it down the line, but for now just ignoring it as best I can.
For mine, (a 2021), I’ve noticed the rev hang is better shifting from first to second when I shift over 3,000 rpm. All rev hang and throttle stick issues annoy me, but the 1st to 2nd hang is most obnoxious.

Glad this was posted because I have been getting used to my newly purchased '14 Tacoma Sport Manny and it has this mannerism, which I didn't know was normal. By the way, love that term, "Rev Hang:" I'm going to look into this ecu alteration, that be dang certain.

Rev Hang is a very good description for sure. It has to hurt MPG some too. I am going to try the ECU tune as well. Even though I have found out now that it is normal and found out that its not just me not knowing how to shift it is just too annoying not to fix.

I have a 2007 with the 6 speed which I've had for over half of it's 190k miles (long story but I've owned it twice). It does the same thing (as they all do), and honestly once you get used to it it really isn't as bad as folks here say it is. There's a certain shift cadence that it is perfectly smooth and makes sense. Would I want it on a high performance sports car? No. Is it a problem once you get the feel of it? My answer is No, yours may vary. And for the record, I think it helps the longevity of the clutch, as it matches the revs a little better (which is what it is supposed to do). I'm on the stock clutch, and I've had several other manuals (A Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix), a Subaru Impreza, an Outback)) that didn't get anywhere close to these miles with the original clutch. I'd be very suspect as to whether it has any effect on MPGs, as the engine is almost coasting unloaded during the hang.

Good info thanks. I am getting used to it a little more but it is still annoying. I have never had this with an MT I have had in the past. That is a good point on the longevity of the clutch. I am only on my second tank of gas in it so I am sure it will get better as I move on.
Like your handle "Kayak Taco" I purchased this truck as a rolling marketing tool for my kayak shop in Georgia. Working on a wrap and rack system for it now. My son said I need to call it "Fish Taco" since my shop specializes in fishing kayaks.

Rev-hang is present in most modern manual vehicles. It’s there for emissions. They program the ECU so all the unburned fuel gets burned, otherwise the mixture in the intake manifold might be too “rich”.

This is my first vehicle that has it as well, I’ve had many manuals over the years. It took some time to get used to but it’s not bad at all. The tune did help a bit in my case.
