    I do and I wouldn't want to. SMT stuff is a bear. Chips especially. 24 connection points all with a microscope and heat pen. I can solder with the best of them but I hate SMT

    Have you actually opened one of these up to see what that circuit looks like? I haven't so I am only speculating. I would be surprised if it wasn't a single or pair of discrete transistors. Those would be driven by some kind of microcontroller. If that is the case they wouldn't be too bad to do with a good hot air station or even a fine tipped soldering iron depending on the component shape.

    Got one of the gauge cluster. I'm pretty sure that's where the ill- for dimming comes from.
