A stock Taco would be more than capable of getting there and back. All the big roads up there like the Golden Rd, Telos Rd etc are passable with a sedan if its dry, but it wont be a comfortable ride.. Thats where tires and suspension come into play, they give you the ability to run smoother and faster. But airing down also helps a lot. I personally run about 25 psi up there on my E range BFG KO2s. And a full sized spare is basically mandatory in case you catch a piece of shale or a stick the wrong way.

@SR-71A might be the year of the CV with those hill climbs we spotted...

Idk about those ones we saw, but Im sure we could find some in that category :stirthepot:

Every time I go on a trip I get this looming sense of not being prepared cause I dont have a spare one. Sooner or later Ill probably do something stoopid haha

You should definitely plan for some upgrades :)

We'll have a stock-ish group too, so you'll be fine. The only question is how fast you want to run on those roads, it's doable with a regular truck.

Spare half shafts are a really good idea, and not very expensive.

At least one full sized spare per truck is mandatory.

    ^^ This ^^

Easily doable with a stock truck. First time I did it years ago was with a friend's 2WD regular cab Ford Ranger. We had no recovery gear or anything like that (young & clueless), but we made it in & out incident free.

And like someone else mentioned, many people do this with cars. It's not anything that's terribly difficult.

^yep. At the end of the day most of it is just roads.

Side note , the road out to the bomber got incredibly soft last year in the July rain. Enough for mud up to the rim. Just food for thought.

I’m still stock and most likely won’t be making any suspension upgrades for a bit. Been making headway convincing the wife on a suspension upgrade, but we have some upcoming projects with the house and need to save some funds for that. Other than ride comfort, any concerns with a stock trd or?

Really interested in this trip based on reading the other write ups, and the fact that it’s family friendly; I think the wife would really love this.

Edit: disregard; I see @SR-71A responded to the same question yesterday. My b.. I’ll be keeping July/August open for this; count me in.

What does everyone think of July 4th weekend? Gives us an extra day in the woods.

Holy crap! I've been there twice as a kid. Our Boy Scout troop would paddle the Allagash river every so often 110 miles the way we did it. I remember seeing those engines and my one friend went climbing in and around the rusting hulks. He got stuck for a few minutes and I was thinking to myself if you get stuck out here you're screwed! On word of advise, we walked down the tracks to check out the box cars that were falling apart and some of the wooden rail ties collapsed under our feet and a wave of ground bees came flying out. Thanks for posting this brought back some good memories.
PS my neighbor growing up was a WW2 Navy vet and served on the oiler USS Allagash. He just recently passed but he was a great man. He was a loader on the AA guns on the ship. Also heard he was quite a boxer.

If I wasn't so freakin far away Id join in!

Very cool. My troop never went up there, but we did some paddling on the Canadian border.
