Well good day out hunting meteors. Didnt find any but did find stuff so that was good. Good meeting @OnHartung'sRoad!

I found some boot nails i think, rail road nails, couple big bolts, some lightly magnetic rocks lots of hot rocks...we didnt get bit by any snakes or injured ourselves so all in all a good day! Next time have to get Hobbs down to show us how its done...;)

I kinda found it with two different machines, neither of which gives a visual readout.
When I have a chance I will swing the Equinox over it and see.

Awesome! Sounds like you guys had a good day. Good for you!
It is good to find stuff, even if it doesn't have a lot of value. It sucks getting completely skunked.
Sounds like my detecting buddy Kevin has not been out for meteorites...

I'm not sure that I can show you how it's done. I can certainly give a few pointers, but I'm no professional grade detectorist.
I would enjoy getting out with the two of you. Perhaps we can get something going before the summer heat sets in.

It would be interesting to find old maps of that area showing railroad stuff (depots and camps) and other old structures.

It was great meeting you today, Will. And thanks for a great day! I just got home and will catch up with details tomorrow. Oh yea, my wife said the white layered rocks are chalcedony. Pretty stuff, post a photo of that cool piece you found!

Hey, check this out! Some of my ‘basic’ rocks found today under a UV minerallite

And a closeup of the two in the upper tight corner:

The green rocks are chalcedony (silica deposited by water), and the red is calcite.

That's badass... I'm on my phone and went straight to Amazon to buy a "uv minerallite" after seeing your post...it automatically changed to "uv mineral light" when I searched, what should I be looking for is it just a black light flashlight?

The 2 in the top right red circle may very well be... they have the conical shape on one end... the others in the lower corner could be fragments that flew off on impact or rentry.. more likely impact though.20200502_225341.jpg

It has to be a shortwave UV light (254nm frequency bulb), not a longwave “blacklight”. Also get UV safety glasses, these lights can hurt eyes if someone looks directly at the light. I got my light and glasses from UV Tools in Texas. They have two models in stock, a 4-watt and 11-watt model- We got the 11-watt one for use while walking around at night, its better for looking for minerals on the ground.
