I've never heard of this, interesting.
Next time I find some Galena I'm gonna play around a bit. Your reading indicated native Galena? That pellet you found doesn't look native.

I agree, but the mines in the area I found it had very dark tailings and perhaps it was from lead sulfide. The galena I found in the past was box shaped too, this was well rounded and did look like melted slag. The inside is very shiny and appears just like a galena crystal sample we have.

Another thing I didnt realize about the 4500 - wow, it doesn’t like an urban environment. It runs and hums sweet out in open areas, but not near houses with wifi and power lines. Is your 5000 like that? I will have to stick with my GM in that type of environment.

Oh yeah, the GP/GPX series detectors pick up on everything: fluorescent lights, transmission lines, anything electrical around the house, the list goes on and on.
You can be in the middle of nowhere and a commercial air liner at 35,000' will light it off. No kidding.
Surprisingly, military fighters (we get quite a few around here) don't really seem to matter.
And be mindful of ANY metallic objects on your person. The MineLab PI's are designed to find that stuff!

    Jeeze really?

    That stuff is insane.

I also saw a PI on CL for 650. Was an older model of sorts, had a big PVC square with suspenders for detecting and multiple heads.

Ah, that explains why it randomly went off a couple times in the middle of the desert in a blank target free area, thanks!

Oh, and besides having a hell of a clean up after driving through it, what’s wrong with red mud?? Here’s some dirty photos for ya!

Do any of your other detectors have that issue?

The ATX, but to a lesser degree.
I think many detectors will pick up RFI if it is close enough. But none like the PI machines do!

You’re not kidding. Im glad I have it for the desert where I mostly will be prospecting, but I was hoping to use it around some old buildings in town, but not sure if it will work there due to nearby power lines. My GM works there fine, but I’d like to try detecting for deeper vintage stuff. I guess I will need to tell my wife I need another detector! :bananadance:

Be careful going down that road. I have a stable of detectors now, and I can only use one at a time...
Try the 4500 and see if you can get it to run. You might be able to tweak it down. There's a fine line though, if you dumb it down too much, you lose depth.

    First know the area.
    Second know the soil.
Third know the machine or box you chose to use.

Different types of machines for different soils. I have hunted in way to many different places that on one outing I would take six machines with me for just soil changes.
Watch what you get and learn it.

Know how the size of a coil can help you when turning down the sensitivity. A coil can only shoot the depth of its diameter. know that and then adjust to fit what is tolerable for you to hint but not go crazy. Make sure you find your zen before hunting under power lines.

just looked at their Facebook page- did Larry (owner?) offer to take uou out for training? Ask if he goes out if you can tag along, the guys I bought my two detectors from met up with me out in the field for a whole afternoon. It was really good experience and helped me a lot, as did the guys here. I met up with wilcam47 out in Arizona for a day to look for meteorites, and Hobbs is a pretty good know it all, as is WileECoyote who started this thread.

I really like the 4500- got to work with it out in Quartzite for about 6 hours with the owner when I got it. When I got home, it stopped working and I realized why- all those wifi transmitters and power lines around me!

anyways, it will be a learning curve for sure, but it went pretty well when I was out there - I even found a place west of Quartzsite on my way home with a lot of potential- old drywasher piles, mine shafts and old can piles. No gold yet but lots of tiny wire, nails and bullet bits.

Good advice! I have been lucky enough to go where power lines are few and far between, but more recently have taken interest in some old abandoned homesteads and farm houses that are near a power utility corridor and other power related issues.
