    You are right, not really a rosette, usually referred to as a "civil war bridle bit boss" interesting the rosettes commonly had hearts on them, Id love to know the story of the heart I dug, there is probably another one out there.

    Those on the east coast such as Sebastion/Melbourne areas should have a blast and the possibility of finding gold could be high

    If I were you, I would go back out and swing on that area again. Funny what you can find even going back over an area 5-6 times.

    Thanks. One thing that has me a little confused is the piece of bit I found with it doesnt really match being that it doenst have a lower mount for the boss, and the attachments seem a little different. I'm wondering if they replaced the broken bit I found with the US one, and took the bit bosses off and threw them away with the old broken bit, or this bit could have been modified? Who knows, the correct bit could still be in the ground, I need to spend some time and clear out the area of iron as its thick.

    I would bet money that there is more stuff in the ground. Dig everything out there!

    Not to pry, but is this an old Fort, or homestead, or ghost town? Don't give away the location unless you want to see craters the next time you go out there. I've seen that happen before...

    Sharpie fir size reference, the heart is about the size of a quarter... it looks like it was riveted to something, maybe leather or part of the bit itself.

    "Good" or "Cheap". Pick one.

    That's kinda how it works with metal detectors.

    I woke to a beautiful morning and decided to go detecting. My buddy and I went out and he out-did me, like he usually does. He came up with a 1862 "S" Seated Liberty Half Dollar in really good condition. It is a shame that he scratched the reverse when he dug it out...
    I found my usual pile of rusty nails.

    I was about to ask the same thing. Just retired and have always wanted to get into it but never had the time. I want a good one that isn’t too complicated to operate.

    @Hobbs nailed it.
    I've spent up to $14000 for a detector and some extras. But then I was able to use it as second income. I think mostly depending on what you want to find and the soil type are the important factors in buying a detector.
    Know first if your coin, relic, or gold hunting then look at the soil type. Know if there soil is high in minerals and iron. Then see if there is basalts or volcanic rock and soil. Next take into consideration a machine with iron identification. I lost all my good machines in the camp fire but have my Garret AT gold left because it was at a friend's house. I had to learn the machine all over again after losing my two minelab machines and my two whites detectors.
    You find out when you get one what it's all about.

    I know nothing does everything well but... Is there a good generalist model that will do it all relatively well? Keep in my mind I would be a brand new neophyte hobbyist with absolute No idea what I’m doing.

    Garrett AT pro or AT gold work great for coin and relic. As does whites DFX. Higher end minelab 3030 is my high end choice.
