Now THAT is a bummer!!!:goingcrazy:

Good on your buddy though... Seriously!!!:fistbump:

    What Garrett did he get?

His next purchase should be a pinpointer to reduce the risks of "scratching", but it does and WILL happen from time to time unfortunately.

Just received a Garrett 300i as a birthday gift; seems like a pretty decent entry-level machine from what I can tell. Metal detectors are one of those things that I've always though were neat, and kind of wanted one, but never quite got around to getting... well, now I gots! :D I don't have any special goals, other than just 'seeing what I can find'... any suggestions, tips, tricks, or 'best practices' for a newbie to the hobby?

You might get out to a local park and get acquainted with the machine. Many (most) parks are detected fairly often, but you will still find stuff.
I recommend watching a handful of YouTube's regarding your machine. And gather a handful of coins to understand what the machine is telling you when you swing over them.

    Good luck and have fun!

Thanks, I've been playing around in the yard, going to try a local park tomorrow and see what I can find.

Build a collection of bottle caps, aluminum foil scraps, pull tabs, coins etc. and listen to the signal generated from each one. Tune your ears to identify this stuff while it is still in the ground. You'll be an expert in no time!

And for the love of God, PLEASE learn how to "cut a plug"!!! This kid explains it pretty well. I'll add in though, I always carry a small wash towel with me so I can place whatever excess dirt on to the towel and then put it back into the hole and then plug the hole... plus clean the area just like he is doing.
    https://youtu.be/ppbLz9DeGEk

Btw, if the ground is too dry, I'll typically NOT "hunt" that area. It just all depends on how dry the soil is for the area and I don't want to increase the risk of killing the grass that much more.

Anyways, that is just me when it comes to dry soil areas.

Get a Lesche Digger and a pin-pointer would be my other suggestions. I have the older Garrett Pro-Pointer and it still works to this day. I also have the Harbor Freight Handheld "metal detector", but it is not as robust as the GPP, but it will get the job done. I modified it by putting in an old cell phone "motor" (i.e. the little motor that causes the phone to vibrate). So it now makes noise and vibrates the handheld unit.

There are some very knowledgeable MD'rs here on this thread so just ask away!!!

Anyways, I hope this helps, happy hunting, and good luck!!!:fistbump:
