Welp, I’ve had a bit of luck swinging the coil lately.

    Upper left: Chinese coin
Upper right: 1897 “S” Barber Quarter
    Lower coins are 1902 & 1904 V Nickels.
    Center: 1887 Indian Head Cent.

The quarter is kinda neat in that it is relatively rare and would be worth some money if it weren’t in such poor shape.

Well, we returned for more yesterday before the storms hit this week to look on a dry lake for space rocks. Didn’t find any, but came home with a bunch of jasper, agate and another pretty rocks.

Winter is here…again. Are you getting snow yet? No, its not Franconia- we were at a dry lake near Barstow. Some have found meteorites out here on the lakebeds- easier to see that way. But I suspect they’re mostly gone by now by all the others who collect them from the lake beds too. They are much harder to find in Franconia as they are hidden along so many other Earth rocks, and where people have to use detectors just to find them!

Finally the work gift cards. Unfortunately, I can only use them with certain stores. But finally ordered the Minelab Vanquish 340 from Cabela's. Any suggestions on using it at the beach?

No snow lately… but winter’s not over.
I will get out to search for space rocks one of these days.
My buddy and I have been looking for coins. A couple days ago he found a 1898 Barber quarter and I found a 1902 Barber dime. No pictures. :(

@klavender1 What would you like to know specifically? Gear? Where to hunt?

First off, regarding gear, I typically go "full gear". Meaning I will bring gear along that one would normally use for "park/grass" hunting. I do this because every now and then I will hit grassy areas that are used as picnic type areas and/or where people just simply sit and rest. If I only bring gear for "dry sand hunting" and nothing else, well, there you go for the reasoning.

So, as far as beach gear goes though, I use a "bend over sifter". I have a handled one as well, but I like using the hand sifter so much better. It's really a matter of preference. Most will tell you to buy a handled scoop sifter. Me, I just prefer the bend over hand sifter. But that is my personal preference.

GET A PINPOINTER!!! The one good thing about dry sand hunting is that you can use a fairly cheaply constructed PINPOINTER without worrying to much about breaking it as the sand will typically be really soft/loose.

Where to hunt on the dry sand, look for "towel lines". Hunt along the front of the towel lines a few feet, if that, and just walk/swing the length of the beach, turn around after a half mile or so, and "move a few feet over" to where the towel line would typically be and swing along that path. When you get to the spot of where you first started, move a few feet over to the "back of the towel line" and swing along that line. Also, you want to slightly overlap your last grid pattern walk.

You are basically "walking a grid type pattern". Do this either early morning before beach goers get there or in the afternoon when people are, more or less, leaving the area.

I personally like hunting in the afternoon hours when people are pretty much leaving the beach. Over here in my area, they "comb the beach" in the early mornings and it can get pretty annoying.

As far as what are known as "cuts", I have NEVER had ANY luck with "cuts". It is the area where the high/low tide creates a "hill" if you will. People will always tell you to hunt along the cuts. Me, it has always been a waste of my time. If you decide to hunt cuts, then go ahead, obviously. You will never find me doing it though. Although, on SUPER RARE occasions, I will hunt along the cuts... But super rare for me to do that.

For VLF machines, "black sand" can be very noisy!!! Some machines you can "ground balance", which SHOULD help a little. I don't have much luck with wet sand hunting. Surf hunting is literally where you go to roughly chest deep, for the most part, hunting. Typically you want a PI (i.e. Pulse Induction) machine for that type of hunting as PI's are not affected by mineralization. I don't have very much experience with PI machines although I do have one. Just need to "learn the language" is what it comes down to. I've tried "surf hunting" with my PI, but I only went as far as knee high because although I can swim, I don't consider myself a "strong swimmer", so I know my limits. Back in the day of when I was a kid and knew no fear, as I got older, fear struck!!!:laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl:

So finally, go back to my OP and I show most of my gear that I use. I will try to add more pictures of my gear as well.

What I want to start to do is whenever I find and post something, I want to state what was the type of metal detector used, type of "soil", and the approx depth of the target. As well as gear that was used to recover the object.

HAHAHA, you're going to find out pretty fast and quick that your typical MD'r usually doesn't like to disclose any information on WHERE they found their recovered objects or their "secret metal detecting hunting location". :spy::laughing::laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl:

I hope this helps, but ask away either way?

Wow! Thanks for all of that info! Typically I like to avoid the beach normally because it's hot and I don't like people. :D But beach metal detecting seems fun. I just ordered the Minelab Vanquish 340. It has some "multi-iq" technology which is "supposed" to work well with salt water and wet sand. This one doesn't ground balance, I think the multi-iq is supposed to compensate for different dirt. I've also ordered the Garrett carrot. Most of my detecting I think will be inland. Lots of early American history around Camden, SC.

    Beach md'ing is definitely fun.

I mainly go beach hunting during the cooler months as there are still plenty of people that still go to the beach and very happily drop their belongings. :D

If you do stay more inland, if/when hunting parks with pretty nice lawn care, bring a towel (dish towel size). When cutting a plug, place the towel next to the hole, place the dirt on the towel if there is an excess amount of dirt, retrieve your find, take the towel and dump the dirt back in the hole, place plug flap over, and pat down.

Doing that makes for a cleaner "dig area" instead of placing the dirt on top of the grass, which then makes it hard to leave as you found it.

Anyways, bring golf tees to help mark off any grid patterns you may want to do for whatever reason.

Get a Lesche Digger, Hori Hori, Fiskars Garden Trowel, etc. I would get a Lesche, which I have one and the thing just keeps going. Some people like the Sampson T-Handle shovels too.

Nice wireless headphones with noise cancel. There’s currently a $10 coupon available on Amazon for it so it’s 29.99 instead.
If your detector doesn’t have Bluetooth, the Bluetooth console I posted earlier works well with it also.

I ordered the Minelab hard plastic digger on the recommendation of a friend that detects. Basically he uses it so he can use the trowel full of dirt and run it in front of the coil.

I already have a set of Samsung Galaxy buds live. I'm not sure of their latency though so not sure how well they may work for detecting. Supposedly there's a gaming mode you can set them to reduce latency. However this requires the Samsung Wearable app which REQUIRES your location to work. Not going to do that. I have a Samsung phone which I've disabled so much crap that comes on the phone. Even pairing these to my phone, I couldn't just pair them like any other BT device. I had to allow location and setup this Wearable app. Once paired I promptly deleted all the nonsense and denied permissions for everything else. I was very close to sending them back just for that. But they work just fine without all the extraneous nonsense. Which just proves they are just doing it to sell your information. Sorry for the rant, this kind of thing annoys me.:rofl:
