What would you guesstimate the opium tin dimensions to be? I would lie to be able to recognize one, or pieces of one, if I saw it.

About 2x the size of a pack of cigarettes, I included an IH on the top for some sense of scale but I know it doesnt help much.

I had no idea what they were either until I was out with a detecting buddy and we started finding them. Like I said RARELY will you find them out of the ground like this. Usually just find bits. That rectangular piece on the left I find ALOT, and you probably have to and not know what they were. Often just find pieces of those. It is an interior bolster for the thin housing. Also the lids or caps shown below the tin are somewhat common and fun to find as they have the chinese characters on them.

Ahhh... I see. I think I have seen the rectangular interior piece as it looks mighty familiar. I will keep my eyes peeled for that stuff. I would like to find a lid with the characters on it. Neat!

Thank you for posting pictures and sharing!

I know , right? I kinda go backasswards sometimes. I have a bunch of scuba gear not using, I bought and built probably $3k worth of knife making equipment, yet to make any knives. Distilling equipment, yep haven't put a buzz on either. Somebody just needs to jump start my ole ass.:angrygirl::rofl:

I've decided that I am going to get a Minelab Vanquish 540 as my first detector. Gets great reviews and reasonably priced. Probably order it this week. I can't wait to get this hobby going.
