After lots of research, I ordered the new MineLab Vanquish 540. It came today and I couldn't get it together fast enough. I headed down to a newly cleared (old growth woods) lot in my neighborhood. It about an hours time, I had a little pile of junk. I'm pretty excited because I've never had a detector in my hands. First find was part of a spoon. I ended up with the spoon, part of some old scissors, a 50cal shell casing, 2 square nails, and a random hunk of iron. There are several targets that I couldn't dig because they had the depth meter pegged out and I only had a very small garden shovel with me. I'll
    go back more prepared tomorrow.

Gohler Wash does seem like it has mentioned a lot in the literature, No wonder why it’s so popular. The Dale district closer to where I live is also very popular, but a lot of it is closed to detecting as well because it lies in the national park now. Seems like you’ve been doing this for a while, where else have you dry washed out in the desert? I’ve never tried that, I think detecting is more my style, but I do find it interesting. Drywashing in the desert is a lot like doing archaeological digs and screening - just as dirty and also hard, and much faster!

Dude, that is awesome! If you are pulling square nails, you are in the right neighborhood! Square nails get my attention, and I think I would spend a bit more time in that location. Good for you!
I very recently went shopping for another coin/treasure machine and the Vanquish was very high on the list. Nice machine! You will do good things with it!

    Keep the finds coming!

Detecting, in my experience, is MUCH more productive than dry washing. You can shovel into a dry washer all day and come away with a few little flakes. You can (sometimes) detect for much less time and come away with a nugget weighing maybe a few grams. I don't know if you have run a shovel for hours at a time, but that sh*t sucks. Straight up. I hung up my shovel a few years ago.
Now, all of the places I have dry washed, I have also detected as it is all placer. My prospecting partner and I have dry washed in the El Paso's, the Inyo's, and over in Esmerelda County in western Nevada. And detected in those locales also. We have been to the Western Sierra's a handful of times and hope to go back. We also have been up Northern Nevada a few times, but haven't really brought home a lot of gold (yet:D).

I received it yesterday and assembled/charged it last night. It wasn't fully charged at bed time, so I wasn't able to play with it.
Today I took it to the park for a couple hours and dug a half dozen zinks and a Washington quarter. The quarter was about 9" which is not super deep, but the 800 gave off a great signal for the depth. I thought maybe it was a silver dime. I am not sure if my E-Trac would have given off as clean a signal on that target. I also dug a bunch of foil/aluminum and learned that the numeric target scale is shifted between the two machines. That will take some getting used to. One thing I like is the audio signature as compared to the E-Trac. It sounds "cleaner." It will certainly take a few hours to get a feel for the machine, but my early impression in favorable!
I do like the wireless headphones!

    What have you been digging??

Just checked out that magazine tonight at our local bookstore - besides the latest copy, he has a bunch of unsold ones also in stock going back to 2014. Made him a deal and got one of each old month he had in stock going that far back for 50c each! :)

You will have to bench test it with real gold targets. OK I hate to admit this but I kept getting really strong hits in my digging spoon everywhere and kept thinking I was dumping something out. So I kept rescooping my pile and trying again and there it was! I was getting really confused and then I realized that I had a hunk of gold on my ring finger that was making it happen. Doh!

Ha! That's the best way to learn. You won't forget that any time soon!

If you find gold on your ring finger, it doesn't count.
