If you found one worth getting professionally redone, that might be kinda cool. I rarely wear a collared shirt that’s not an under armor polo so don’t think I could pull one off. lol:rofl:

My wife wears socks with her sandals, likes looking for rocks and loves camping in the desert. She’s pretty cool. The only problem is that she hates it when I wear out my pants and starts patching all the holes in them without asking. It’s always just when they’re getting really comfortable the way I like them. I haven’t said anything though so it’s my problem, not hers.

Equinox 800? How is it working out for you for depth and are you digging everything? What do the ‘numbers’ everyone mentions on it mean?

I am curious as my wife is getting more interested in it. Tax refund finally looks good this year, so I was thinking what could make good company for my GM1000???

No AU yet though, perhaps having 2 would help. Plus she’s interested in it supplementing her historic archaeological work and I thought a 800 may be a good choice for both. Suggestions?

    Hmmm... good questions.
I have not had the machine long enough to get to know it. Having said that...

The machine is fantastic in that it is very sophisticated. For the price ($899 set by MineLab) it has features that other more expensive machines do not. It uses multi-frequencies which allow it to detect multiple types of targets. The differing freq's used in combination allow the machine to penetrate deeper and respond better to high conductive targets (such as silver and copper) while at the SAME TIME pick up less conductive targets (gold). The Equinox is designed to detect multiple types of targets in varied ground conditions (mineralization), provide more accurate target ID and improved detection depth, and to be relatively easy to use. Additionally, the Nox is said to be able to separate trash (iron) and desirable targets extremely well, and this can be a big deal at some sites (I have seen this already and I'm a believer!).

I am not digging everything, to my detriment. I need to dig it all until I understand what the machine is telling me.
I was at a park recently and kept getting 3-4 signals which turned out to be aluminum. So I dug pull tops and beavertails and screw tops and gum wrappers and can slaw and on and on. After digging enough of these targets I stopped digging them. Well, certain gold rings come in with the same signal. Could be I left good stuff in the ground...

I went out yesterday in an iron infested field and became frustrated. I got a specific signal and dug it on the first 10-12 targets, all ferrous. I then assumed that the repeated same signal was the same target (foolish assumption). I fooled myself into believing that most of the signals I was hearing were all ferrous targets. In fact, I didn't dig one non-ferrous target at that site. After a while I got out the E-Trac and swung around for a few minutes and dug two lead bullets and a brass casing. Hmmm... Not happy with my day, I later stopped at a local park and dug a couple of zinc cents with the Nox. I usually dig a couple then ignore that signal, but I know I need to dig it all so dug another. The next zinc signal was a silver ring. So yeah, dig it all until you understand your machine!

The numbers folks talk about (on the machines that I am familiar with) represent the conductivity of the target. Different machines use different scales, so these numbers are machine specific. There is considerable difference between my E-Trac and the Nox, which doesn't help me one bit. I am certain that the audio signal is giving you prolly 90% of the info you need on the target, once your ears and brain are properly trained.

I would not normally recommend a do-it-all machine but instead would favor a dedicated detector, but I think that the Nox would be a good addition for the two of you. I do not know how it does on gold nuggets, but for the two of you to get out and prospect and to use the machine for relics, it would be a good fit. And it would be a relatively inexpensive avenue to see if you enjoy these hobbies.

    Good luck!

Iron indicator? Is that a differentiation setting? On my Gold Monster, I use it off exclusively.
