I wouldn't be able to tell you. But if you are curious, post it up on TreasureNet. There are some very knowledgeable folks over there.

I would assume they smoked it, I have just spent alot of time around these sites with alot of opium usage an never found pieces of something that looked like a pipe. Or maybe I have and just didn't realize it. Like I said need to do more research about it. It is another fascinating aspect of life back then. I would assume there was a prevalent chinese population down by you as well.

There were Chinese in this area in a broad sense. They worked the railroads and there are plenty of those here in eastern CA/western NV. I have had friends tell me that they have found bunches of Chinese tokens along the railroads.

Hit that with a 10# sledge to see if it is "empty"? :notsure::boom::bananadead:

How I check rounds to see if the primers are still good?

Well I DID find an opium pipe. I found these two brass pieces a few feet apart at first didn't realize they went together as I thought the one part was a barrel tap. Turns out it's an opium pipe that had broken at the base of the bowl. Looking to have it soldered back together and going to find a piece of bamboo that will work with it, hopefully there is a mouthpiece somewhere around there to be found!

Used to be - teacher now. My specialty was desert mammal species mostly, bats and krats, but I also did a lot of tortoise. Still like getting out there now for fun, and I always loved the geology and minerals out there- thats why I finally got a good detector. What type of work were you doing?
