I have a short 3-magnet Apex and thought the magnets are glued in. Ohhh, no wonder why there’s a gap in the ring! Do you use a flathead to pry them out? I should do a similar fit on my hoe. I am hoping to use it to scrape the top inch or so of a few tailing piles to clear them of brass, clay pigeon pieces and lead shot to get to cleaner material underneath.

That record shows lat and long for just the one meteorite. Ive tried finding a better record for the supposed “Bullhead Strewn Field”, but nobody has shared it online I guess. There is one for the “Franconia Strewn Field” near Needles- Google it to see pics of what’s been found.

I have been using the E-Trac at older sites and taking the Nox to the park. I'm still working on the signals it's giving me. I want to use the Nox at the older sites, but I'm not ready...

I was out on some nearby BLM land that had a couple old mines on it, tailings had lots of quartz chips all over the place, some that were mineralized and colored with iron and copper.

Sad thing is that all of the tailings piles and much of the surrounding areas were covered with shotgun shells and every other sort, so I’ve been working on my custom rake to clean some of that up and re-try. At least no one else has been doing much useful detecting on the tailings based on how much trash there is on top of them. I fabricated some metal rings to hold magnets on the rake, will be welding them on soon and getting out there within a week or two.

Very trashy sites can be a curse and a blessing! Learn to detect in very trashy areas and you will find things that others have missed.
It can be frustrating at first, but stick with it.

DST this weekend means detecting after work starting next week! :woot:

Oh yea, longer daylight l!! :bananadance:

You have a good point about the trash. Any suggestions on telling the difference between a signal from lead vs gold? Or should I get one of those electronic gold sniffers that can detect it from 1/4 mile away? Someone’s got to be buying that stuff, otherwise they wouldn’t make it!

Anyways, the Pinacate district was a minor producing area in its time, so I chould make at least a little profit working it - some fun per effort, if anything! It’s close by so I just consider it to be a proving ground to hone my detecting skills.

Prolly the best thing you can do to train your brain the difference between gold and other targets is to buy a gram size nugget ($60ish per gram) and run the Monster over and over it. Commit that audio signal to memory. Sounds obvious, and it is. The only thing that sounds like gold is gold. Granted, it is very difficult to differentiate gold and lead. I dig any signal that sounds close to gold, and this includes a lot of lead (a lot of lead!). Comes with the territory.

If you have a small nugget of gold, you can occasionally reset your ear to it's signal. And you can make adjustments and see how they may change the signal you get swinging on gold.

Could that have been a new year’s bullet from the sky?

Talking about bullets and previous residents, I had just moved into a National Park bunkhouse for a season once, and noticed a bunch of 22 cal bullet holes all along the floor boards in the main living room. I asked the maintenance guy why they were there, and he said it was because the fire crew didn’t like rats.
