Thanks. I did actually know what it was and I researched how to clean it before I did anything besides clean it gently with water and a soft bristle brush. Honestly, I did like it better before I cleaned it with CLR, but I don't think the CLR damaged it in any way. I'll give it some time on the next artifact that I find.

Funny you say that. I found a 1876 Seated Liberty Quarter and cleaned the gunk off of it. It is super worn and not worth much, but after I cleaned it, I wish I hadn't. It looked better with the desert patina.

I'm very new to this hobby of metal detecting, but I think I learned the value of keeping things as close as possible to the way they were found. From now on, I will probably do just enough cleaning to get a good ID and then leave stuff be. Live and learn. After all, I got my first detector on Feb 5th, so I'm learning as I go.

Me too- at least with a real detector! My last one cost a buck or so at a garage sale almost 50 years ago. damn, I’m how old now?!

Went mine touring in my area- Santa Rosa (Northern Belle) and others nearby. Detected on the mine dumps and some tailings. Skunked. Every prospect I found was destroyed by jerks. Why do people fill prospects up with fricken trash!?!? :annoyed:

It’s BLM land but they’re not really dealing with the trash issue, they keep putting up carsonite signs, working the trails and do a good job at it but the place is effed up with trash and other junk. Urban public land syndrome.

Its really deep! And there’s no shoring- video starts while looking up, he’s filming it from the bottom of the hole and says there is a round object at the bottom (a cast of the bottom of his dig bucket? :p).

Isn't it funny how biologists turn into contractors after all that time bio monitoring construction sites?

I know what you are saying... o_O but I don’t know what the hell you are talking about. :anonymous:

Eh, not a contractor but I did build our cabin in the mountains... come to think of it, the septic tank did have some issues because I didn’t know about perc tests before putting it in :p

Your reference to shoring throughout the recent topic. Being that both of us are former biological monitors.
