I went out yesterday for a little while. I found another, bigger 2-piece button, but the front completely fell apart when I tried to wipe it off. I'm going to clean up the back to check for markings, but the button is essentially gone. Also, found a harmonica reed and what I believe is the bell end of a bugle and a very old hoe head. There seems to be lots of relics in that swamp...lots of skeeters too!

Sounds like you found an old encampment - map out carefully where you find those items. Or since its a swamp, did they wash down from somewhere else?

No, I don't believe they washed in. There is really not much area that I can work with that is dry ground. It's just little hillsides around our amenity center for the neighborhood. There no telling what is under the asphalt of the boat ramp parking lot. I'll get a picture of the area when I get back down there.

That’s good, she’s just getting ready for next Christmas!

Come to think of it, what’s with those people who haven’t taken their lights down yet? Are they too busy or what?:anonymous:

What is it with these axe heads?? I have found 4 in the last month! The one that I found today was at least 18" deep in the muck of that swamp that I have been telling yall about. It has something written on it, so after electrolysis, I may be able to date it. Found half of a very old hinge too.
Sorry, I forgot to get pictures of the swamp.

These were actually in the water of the swamp. Evidently, it preserves metal nicely. These have not been cleaned at all.

I love finding old axe heads. You are right it seems like they are everywhere. Also dig a lot of "miner's picks" too.

Post some pictures after the electrolysis.

I can't count the number of broken-off pick tips I have found while chasing gold. I found another just yesterday. Too bad they aren't worth anything.

They're great for blacksmithing. that rought iron mostly is the best for decorative stuff. Works out well and keeps heat longer that most modern carbon steel.
