I have had the Baxter adapter now for two oil changes. Takes 1/2 the time and well worth the $200 in my opinion. I buy WIX 51348 filters which have much more filter area than the cartridge. Each to his own but spin-on is for sure a lot easier to deal with. I really don't give a damn about recycling!

    Bigger oil filtration capacity.
Cartridge is OLD technology. Toyota went back to it because is cheaper for them, not better for you.
    Camry - 4cyl - cartridge oil filter
Tacoma - 6cyl - same oil cartridge as Camry
So glad we don't have a V8 option because we would be using Prius oil cartridge sizes.
Some people know, some need to be informed and some will never believe that in today's global economy, EPA mandates, greed and politics, companies cut corners, use cheap labor and materials and sell you what's in their best interest, NOT yours. $200 for a adapter in a lifetime is nothing, I spend $300+ on cigarettes a months...
The Toyota spin-on oil filter is bigger (as filtration area) compared to the pleated paper insert used in the cartridge.
Environment...tired of kissing every shit hole nation's ass for us to save the planet and them to pollute without restrictions as China, India, Africa, South America. I will chuck that mofo spin-on canister in the garbage without giving a shit about it. With oil inside...

    This has come up before.
They'll tell you it part of break in as it looks not to be that much and would be normal.

If you're still getting it after your first two changes I'd be concerned. But worth mentioning when you get your first change.

    I did changes at
    2000km, 8000km, 16,000km, 30,000km, 45,000km

After the 16k I didn't see it anymore

Luckily you change your oil at 10k, could have been bad.

Oil is doin it’s job pretty dark for 8k. Mine still looks new and is hard to see on the dipstick at 50k. I wouldn’t worry about the shavings, do the oil change and monitor it.

No reason to change oil early, unless of course you have a problem with metal shavings. Initial factory filled oil has a very high Moly content, which help tremendously with break-in process. You can't get same off the shelf oil so I'd keep it in for at least 5k miles.

    Oh my aching head....

This is like a fucking ping pong match - it's an issue, it isn't an issue, it's something to worry about, don't worry about it, change your oil immediately, wait until 10K to change your oil.......oh the agony.

This whole thread is TW as fuck. 4 pages of conflicting opinions. Half the posters are right....half are therefore wrong....hopefully for the OP he figures out which before it's too late (or not too late).

I'm going to be bringing into the dealer tomorrow, so hopefully I can get an answer, I will be sure to update with their findings.

I know I should and never have just changed the oil: I always change the filter. The last couple of Tacoma's, the San Antonio assembly plant put the filter on so tight I could not get the filter off and had to go to the dealer on the first oil change. So I figure since they think it is ok for 10k miles on the oil filter, I will leave it. Metal filings in the filter aren't going anywhere. It is the shavings in the oil I want out of there.

I called two dealers and they won't change the oil until 10k miles. I would have to pay for it. So, I am not paying $100 to change the oil when I can drain and fill it myself for $50

Half this forum will tell you the dealer is lying (regardless of what the dealer says). The other half will tell you the dealer is correct.

You will be no closer to an answer after your trip to the dealer.

Understand! The over tightened housing seems to be fairly common. On my original 5K change, I broke the wrench trying to get the damn thing off. That's when I decided to buy the adapter. Got it Fed-ex'd and then swapped it out with the canister. The spin-on's never are that difficult to remove and you are working at a much better angle with the wrench.

I sure did like the oil filter right on top of the motor on the 2013 and 2005 4.0L I had. So easy to change the oil. What the heck is Toyota thinking? Let's take something easy and make it hard! Well, I will just have to learn to change the canister filter now. I think I will take off the entire skid plate just to make it easier and less oil mess. I'll see how hard that is on this old body of mine.
