After spending much of the day in the shop I find myself not much closer to having that engine and tranny out.
The engines I have experience pulling and installing are out of honda civics and integras.
The engine/tranny/transfer case combo in the tacoma is a lot larger and different.
I've done some research in the service manual to help me overcome some issues I was having and will give it another go tomorrow.

    Isn't it fun learning!

At least you have no time constraints, or deadlines. If this was your sole source of transportation, the stress would be much higher.

And immediately after removing the engine and tranny I thought, "lets make this thing a convertable!"
This seems like logical thinking no?

I know what you are all thinking, it's not very aero dynamic.
I know, but I have some great ideas!

Amidst tearing into the parts truck I managed to get into my local stealership and pick up the power steering belt I ordered and a new glove box light bulb. And I installed both in the truck.
Power steering belt was squealing on start ups, especially if it was wet out or cold.
It seems a bit better with the new belt but I think I may have an issue in the power steering pump that is making it difficult to turn on startup maybe. I should have someone else start it and have a look at the belt and ps.

Your bearing in the pump could be shot...same thing happened when I had a Subaru. Hopefully Toyota's different, but Subaru doesnt offer a ps pump rebuild kit. New ones were like $400 US and it didn't sound like off brand ones were up to snuff. I had fun taking it apart, and a new bearing did the trick for me.

Thank you for the great info!
I'm going to swap the pump on my truck with the one off of the parts truck and see what happens!

I managed to swap the power steering pump this evening. No change. The symptoms remain.
I really need to have someone start it while I have a look.
I'm kind of shooting in the dark atm.

What else shares the PS pump belt? Are you sure its the PS?

    The fan shares that belt.
I'm assuming it is the power steering belt because you can hear the fan start spinning whel the squeeling stops. While it's squealing the power steering is stiff.
