55 actually is a better length if you have access to them, the 50 only catches about 3 - 4 threads.

    A thing or two...
Does anyone have a measurement on the length of the stock bolt? Also, a measurement on the depth of the pocket on the handle that the bolt comes from would be good. I don't have access to my truck right now to measure myself, and I'd like to get some stuff ordered so it's on hand when I get my truck back.

Don't recall measuring the length of the stock bolt but looking at the comparison picture I posted on the front page of the thread I'd guess it's a M6 x 25mm.

My Tacoma is in my shop an hour from here so we'll have to wait for someone else to measure the depth of the hole in the handle.

How did you know where to drill the hole or was it obvious when you got the bung out?
Looks like you did a very nice job!

On bolt length there is gobs of space behind the factory nut. So if unsure over estimate your needed bolt length. You could be at least 25 mm too long and it wouldn't hit anything on the backside of the nut.

Done and done! I ordered everything from Amazon, including the M6, which was not available at any of my local shops....

I decided that I wanted my iPhone cable easily accessible and moveable, so I used some cable clips to hold it where I want to be. I feel like this won't be a permanent solution, but it's better than just draping it over my steering wheel!

I had to change out the iPhone Cable that runs to the back of my H/U today so I went ahead and drilled the bolt cover to give the install a finished look.

Thank you! I didn't exactly know where to drill the hole so what I did was drill a 1/4" hole exactly center of the bung. I then started stepping it up till I got to 1/2", which is the smallest size needed to get the ball to fit through. From that point I slipped it on the ball and screwed it into the handle, tried to fit the bung in and realized I needed more of an angle on the hole and it to be slightly oval. So I started taking a bit of material off at a time using the 1/2" bit angled into the bung and just test fit in between each bit of material I took off. Once I got it to fit all together I cleaned the hole up with a deburring tool like THIS and then smoothed the edges out on the plastic with some MEK (methyl ethyl ketone).

Also - As I mentioned in my previous post I have an idea for a charging solution and while I didn't get to do it these past days off I fully intend on getting it done these coming days off and will be posting up pics of how I went about it. I think it will be a method many of you will like (granted it works out).

Has anyone done this on a 1st gen? I'm getting tired of my bulky suction cup mount and this is a lot cleaner.

I can't recall where in the thread to find it but I recall reading a post from someone that had success installing it on their first gen Tacoma.

I know when Toyota transitioned into the 2nd gens everything got a HELLUVA lot bigger and wider. There isn't as much clearance between the grab handle and the steering wheel as there is on a 2nd gen.

I'm gonna go ahead and try this on my '98, does anyone know if the grab handle bolt sizes changed over from 1st gen to 2nd gen?

This mod is great. I used a small nylon spacer and a slightly longer bolt to get the ball a little further out of the recess. This allows for a better range of motion for the short arm I used.

I wanted to make sure there was plenty of room for gloves - so far I have had no issues with clearance. I can even control the unit with my finger while my hand is still on the wheel.

This is for my garmin montana, which I also use on my motos - the hot shoe is wired up through a fuse tap. Right now it's tapped into my brake light circuit, but I think I'll connect it to my aux power circuit. The unit automatically powers down or up when the circuit is activated/deactivated. I ran the wire through the weather stripping. Super pro, solid, and clean install and very happy. Thanks OP.
