Haven't looked yet but, has anyone done this to the back seat grab bar? Was thinking it may make a great place to hold a tablet for the kids to watch movies on. With a long enough arm, it could work, right?

I really like this mod, my thanks to the OP! I, like a few others am having a hard time finding the 6mm x 50mm hex head bolt, I purchased a reg. socket type bolt & will try and make it work when the rest of the parts arrive, again my thanks to the op, this is a good idea. jmop

If you have trouble finding the fastener locally and don't mind waiting, they're on eBay for $1:

I've already got a WeBoost signal booster cradle that I mount my phone in...but this mod is so cool, I need to find something to mount on the pillar...

I love the look of this mod and will probably be doing this very soon.
I have a question for the OP or anyone who has used the "double socket arm" that the OP used. Some have said that this mod puts their cell phone or gps dangerously close to the steering wheel. What keeps this arm from moving towards the windshield more?
Would it be possible to use a Dremel to carve away whatever is restricting the movement? That is what I had to do with the ball mount on a motion detector here at home. I couldn't aim it high enough so I removed some plastic to allow it to rotate a bit more.

Murman, I haven't had any issue with rotating the arm so that I can move it to a position that is safely out of the way of my hands while using the steering wheel but if someone needed to make more spare I think that your solution would easily be enough to accommodate what one would be looking for. Looking at this picture from my original post you will see where the double socket arm in in fact a clam shell type arrangement and the part that compresses onto the ball could be shaved to allow even further articulation on either end.

Yeah, I believe so. I ordered a ball mount to try out in different spot in the truck. Looking to see if it will work in the back grab bar too. Would like to have options to put a screen back there for the kids on long trips.

From what I have read, you would need:
    - the ball mount
    - a M6x50mm socket head cap screw
    - 2 6mm nuts
    - 6mm split washer

Then whatever accessories that you want to attach from RAM Mounts.

The OP has pics and a really nice write up.

As @DrFunker stated you could mount an iPad onto the passenger side A-Pillar but I can't imagine how convenient interacting with it would be for the driver. I have an iPad mini on a RAM Mount in my truck that puts it over the lower console / shift knob area. I can see it clearly and it doesn't block my exterior view. A nice perk is that my passenger can rotate the X-Grip mount to use it while on the interstate.

To keep cross talk confusion to a minimum I created a new thread for the tablet holder mod.

Installed the ball yesterday. Very slick, easy install. Hardest part was finding the bolt. Found that at a local M&P hardware store.
Also...checked the back grab bar for future placement of another ball and arm. It will work. :D
