Hello everyone, I am getting the parts to do this today, and the cheapest I found the hardware was through Bolt Depot (.com) 2.30 for the nuts and bolts hardware, 4 bucks to ship. The entire RAM Mount (Ball, X-Grip, Double Socket Arm) was 44$ on Amazon. Also got the Mpow Bluetooth AuxAdapter for 12.

This will be the first Mod to my New (2011, new to me) Tacoma.

    Happy Hunting

Isn't it dangerous to mount anything to the "A" post with an airbag there? Wouldn't the mount become a projectile? I've seen mods using that post or even a mod for the Toyota symbol on the steering wheel, aren't there concerns about air bags?

    Just curious

The A pillar air bag ejects to the side to act as a curtain between the drivers head and the side window. Hence the name, “side curtain airbag.” This mod, nor the solid handle and A pillar cover will become a projectile when the airbag system fires.

Bingo bango couldnt have said it better. The side airbags actually deploy under plastic trim, following the window down. Hence the name.

I did take care around the trigger wires when I had the trim piece off though :anonymous:

I got tired of skimming through the 49 pages trying to find what I need. Does anyone have any experience using this mount but with a magnet plate instead of the the Ram x grip holder? I read on one of the first few pages that one guy used a Scosche with a ball base. Just looking to see if anyone else had luck with a similar setup.

The airbag doesn't go down the pillar. Plus you're removing a bolt for a grab handle and replacing it with a bolt that secures the mount. There are other car models that have an a-pillar trim with a "leash" clip that allows the trim to detach from the pillar but restricts the distance it will go so the trim does not fly across the car. Insofar as the steering wheel, the folks that sell the mods typically put up a disclaimer about it potentially becoming a projectile and to go at your own risk.

It actually does wrap down the pillar. But its on the 'under side' of the grab handle mounts, wires, everything else. So it deploys under the trim downward.

Had to hunt down a Kit (Bracket) with Hardware and Instructions To add a Drivers side A pillar Grab handle to make this mod work on my ‘19 T4R. I’m glad to have it back.

@Soul Surfer, where did you get the kit for adding the handle? Is it sturdy enough to put your weight on it? Thanks.

It’s a 4Runner mate. I’d still like to know what’s behind the 3rd gen Tacoma A pillar plastic trim since our cabs are identical.

I found it over on T4R.org under 5th gen 4runners. A member on their sells it.

Yes it can hold your weight. I haven’t completely tried to lean back while standing on the door sill with all my weight, but I grabbed it to steady myself to step up on the door sill to clean the windshield, thanks.

Ah, so you retrofitted it to a 3rd gen Tacoma?
