I currently have an unmodified TRD STS installed and I'd like to do this mod whenever you get another core

So I happened across this thread while I was perusing Tacoma World and I wanted to throw a shout out to Coupe who did my shifter back in 2013. I broke my stock shifter after a month or so of having the URD short shifter kit installed. I was pretty pissed and disappointed because I loved the feel of the URD SS. I made a post in the forums, Coupe hit me up and I sent my shifter to him to get fixed/upgraded. It's been 7 years since then and I haven't had any issues. Shifter feels great, although going into reverse is still a little stiff (it did that before the repair, it's because of the URD SS). Thanks again Coupe, keep up the great work.

@Coupe do you still offer this if I send you mine? I have a trd short throw that is floppy and it’s driving me nuts.

I do not stock these any more. If you want to send me one to modify, I can repair it.

I'm confused. Is the top black metal conical shifter, attached to the metal rod underneath with a rubber bushing filling that wears out?

That is correct. The part that goes into the transmission is joined to the upper shifter with a rubber bushing. This prevents transmission noise from being transmitted into the cab. It does wear out over time.

Anyone able to describe what this feels like?

My '05 has always shifted "sticky" to me compared to my '16 which shifts more like butter. Both trucks have zero balls, particularly at low RPM so this tends to be what I notice most, how much more the '05 requires muscling into gear. Will new bushing improve things? I did redline MT fluid but not sure what the next step is. URD short shifter?

When the rubber bushing goes bad, there is a lot of play in the shifter.

Think of a pry bar with a firm rubber section in the middle. There is the tip (that goes in the transmission). Rising up the prybar there is a firm rubber section. Then at the very top of the pry bar (this has the shift ball). When the shifter is new, the rubber section is very firm and allows very little movement. When you use the prybar, it works fine. As the shifter gets older, the rubber section gets softer. You have to use more force, to get less prying action.

If the bushing is bad the URD won't fix it. The URD changes the geometry of the tip that goes into the transmission. This is below the rubber bushing.

It is easy to pull the shifter out. 30 minutes to a hour. Once it is out, it is easy to tell if the shifter bushing is bad.

So pull and take photos? I think mine is the opposite of loose. So maybe just “normal”. Only different compared to my 6MT which is buttery.

I would pull it and post pics.

If you are not the original owner, I would be curious if it has been modified.

If the bushing is bad, when the shifter out of the truck, the tip will be "floppy" when you shake the shifter.

I think I’m 3rd owner. Pretty much bone stock at time of purchase, just some aftermarket wheels. It has 128k on the odometer and I was told it was used for lots of short trips in Arizona heat transporting linens for the PO’s property management business.

I’ll do some reading on removal. Thanks for the detail!
