I noticed my frame rails looked hazy after a car wash a few weeks ago. I wondered what it was... thought it was soap residue, but wax makes sense now.

The coating this time around is different than before. It's a heavy grease/wax like Fluid Film. Before it was more a rubberized paint.

That looks like my 2017 frame. Their is some coating on them but it is not holding up. My opinion of Toyota has plummeted recently. This on going crap with frames should have been corrected years ago but they haven't done anything. Now I'm finding out they have had problems with their steering shafts on most of their cars since 2004 and have done nothing except stop selling the grease kit that you could buy from them for $17 to fix the problem. They would rather you pay them $600 to fix the steering shafts. A mechanic told me their are bulletins but no recalls. I also have a 2014 Sienna. There is also the struts that were only seeping while my Sienna was still under warranty that they would not fix. Now the warranty expired that seep is now a leak and they want to fix it. Toyota is forgetting people paid more for a Toyota because they were so damn reliable and you felt like you were getting something. Ive lost that feeling.

There is a consistent correlation for frame rust and Eastern states. Salt is the same everywhere, it's salt. The only factor that changes is lower humidity/dew point west of the Missouri River.

The frame recall letters I received from Toyota for the '97 Taco and the '05 Tundra were just like this new one. They're focused on 13 states, all East of the Missouri.

I've wondered how there is such a discrepancy between rust problems in cold weather states, only thing I can figure is humidity levels are higher in the East.

Mine's an 18 no wax substance found, which is why I coated it inside and out with 3M Cavity wax. I also did the inner rockers, inside the doors, behind the fenders, bedsides, inside the tailgate, and cab floor pans

I didn't see anything that looked like a wax substance on mine either. Of course, my frame is dirty right now too. I haven't washed under the truck since this past Summer. :anonymous:

The layer of dirt may do more to protect the frame than the Sharpie ink or whatever Toyota is using.

I have a ‘97 F-350 and my ‘19 Tacoma, I guess I don’t see the big deal here. I power wash my F-350 frame underbody etc once a year in the summer and wire brush rough spots, then get to spraying gloss black rust oleum. I will wash and paint my new Tacoma the same way. I live Colorado and a little rust isn’t a big deal just wash often in the winter and spray paint in the summer. What am I missing here?!

What is missing is you could probably mistreat your Ford and not have the aggressive rot you will find on a Toyota. I have a stark reminder every day when comparing the E-Coated Ford frame on my F150, that recieves zero care and attention, and has never been cleaned or coated, and sees miles of salt and gravel, to the frame on my Tacoma that requires constant vigilance and upkeep to prevent rust.

There’s no argument. Even Toyota admits they cheap out on the frame coating, hence decades and decades of recalls and bandaids with no end it sight.

Attention Toyota: the right time, and only time, to properly coat a frame is prior to assembly at the factory. Stop being cheap pricks.

Jeep must use the same frame supplier as Toyota. You can watch a Wrangler rust.

Due to an accident my 17’ is having a new frame installed on it soon. Will it have the new anti rust coating on it? If not what should I do to treat the new frame as a preventative measure?

The comments about salt being the same everywhere is not quite true. Here in Ohio they are using a blueish chemical that they spray on our roads that is very corrosive. They mix it with salt brine. I was told it eats aluminum as well.
The big truck frames dont rot away here except for the Tundra. This is a Toyota problem. They have had this problem for 20 years and done nothing to fix it.
My brother in law has a 1987 Toyota pick up with over 200000 miles. That is 32 Ohio winters. The frame is just now starting to go bad. What did Toyota do 20 years ago that has caused these things to rust apart now?
You guys in the rust belt are coughing up $45000 for these trucks that will be junk in 10 years but we still keep buying them.

Looks like ye olde cavity wax like I think I found on my 2020s frame. It's a start. Theres a ton of dry frame under there, I think I'll still coat it with something.

I took my truck in today for service and was told there was a recall on the frame. They did a inspection and was told I would be contacted next week to Schedule the frame coating. Has anyone had this done?

Mine is getting CRC coating February 3rd. They do the inspection and then notify Toyota who then will arrange the CRC coating. I was told dealerships can only do 3 or 4 trucks a week and they will have my truck for 2 days. They have to prep the frame and make sure it is completely dry before they can apply the CRC. I was told they schedule trucks when the material comes in designated for your Tacoma. Good luck.
