The old timer trick was just used engine oil. Spray the entire underside with it.

My uncle lives down in Myrtle Beach and has a 2017 AC TRD Sport 2WD that he bought used; Truck presently has about 18K miles on it and he doesn't drive it much because he's got a Harley that he rides just about everywhere...

He said he'd sell it to me in a few years when he gets bored with it and wants a new truck; I'm guessing that a Southern 3rd Gen won't have frame issues? My 2nd Gen has been through roughly a decade of harsh Pennsylvania winters; My frame was deemed safe and coated with this rustproofing gunk back in October 2017. It has passed two safety inspections since then. I don't if I'm lucky, if I take really good care of my truck, or both, but my frame has been pretty much solid. It seems like more 1st and 2nd Gen 6-lugs (both 2WD and 4x4) have had frame issues than 5-lugs...

I think the main thing with Toyota trucks, is you can’t forget about cleaning and coating the frame, adhering to some sort of schedule. It’s not like a Ford, where you can just forget about it, or other Toyota cars that are rust free. Toyota trucks, including the Japanese 4Runners and Landcruisers, have always been rusty-framed vehicles. It’s some weird part of their corporate philosophy. They’ve had ages to change their ways and they don’t, so it’s up to you to hose off the salt and oil up the frame if required.

Toyota listens to the same bean counter that won’t allow rear disc brakes....

My understanding, from a friend who was a shop mechanic and eventually shop foreman (before he retired) for a Toyota dealer, was that for the first gens, the frame supplier (a US shop, no less) changed the metal formula and coatings on the frame after they got the contract from Toyota. After they settled with Toyota on all the recalls from the gen 1s, the went broke. The owner closed up shop, moved everything south of the border, opened up a new shop with a different name and enough of a change in provenance to fool the Toyota bean counters and did the same thing to supply frames for Gen 2s. But, I have no idea where they get the current frames.

You gotta wonder though. IMHO Either Toyota doesn't inspect vehicle components from their suppliers, or... well, you can draw your own conclusions.

If anyone has a better idea, please speak up.

They need a better formula for the steel. Something with a touch of chromium perhaps. They could also do away with the multi-layer construction, which tends to delaminate, and form the frame from a single heavy layer. Finally, a dip in a hot zinc galvanizing tank.

Maybe they could offer it as an option haha. “Cold weather state Frame” which includes stainless fasteners throughout the undercarriage. Imagine no more rusted nuts and bolts to break on you.

I would pay $1000 more for it.

At this point its intentional. Toyota just sells more vehicles in warm climates and cost justifies the recalls. Theres a reason theyre the most profitable manufacturer in the world you know.
