Morimoto XB LED Headlights for 2nd Gen Tacos!

I actually had the SpecD lights that were listed above and my honest personal opinion of them is that they were trash.

As soon as I got them they looked great, but you have to add an additional layer of sealant to prevent moisture building up within the unit. The light output was terrible and in order to get anything close to the OEM set that I replaced I had to run an HID kit. The DRL bar is more of a purple/blue than white and after a little less than a year of using them the headlights started to haze and peel.

So far, the Morimoto's have been a very well built set. The DRL's are VERY bright, even during the day and the output so far has been better than the HID kit that I ran on the old set of headlights.

You definitely get what you pay for when comparing these 2 brands.

Love the design of these lights. I’m running FX-r retro’s but love that DRL. I’d love to see some output pics and cut off lines if you get some time to take a few.

When you say white version, are you talking about the DRL? I actually really like the orange you have going on there.

 

So I pre-ordered the white DRL version before I knew there was an Amber version. Had debated on changing my order a day too long and got the shipping confirmation a full month or so earlier than I'd expected. And since I have no idea how long it would take to get the Amber version, decided to stay with the white. Did the install this morning, so haven't gotten to check out the output at night, but against the wall in the garage it did certainly seem like a decent upgrade from the Philips Extreme-Vision bulbs I had been using in the factory housings.

The one thing I hope someone has an idea about is how to tie the DRL activation to the 'DRL' setting on the steering wheel stalk. I'd really like to be able to turn off all the lights when switched to the 'Off' position. Has anyone figured out a way to do this?

So I guess where Morimoto has us tap in the fuse box (EFI fuse) for the DRL power is the one that powers on at least once after ignition is off (hours later). I've seen reference to this on other threads where people are wiring any-time fogs or halos on their retrofits. I walked out to the garage yesterday, hours after I'd gotten home, to see the DRLs on, 5 minutes later I checked again and they were off. Problem is, I'm a landscape and astrophotographer, and I go up to my astronomy society's dark sky site on a fairly regular basis. Non-red-headlamps after dark is extremely frowned upon as it ruins everyone's night vision, or could even tamper with the telescope imaging that people are conducting. So having these DRL's decide to light up in the middle of the night is a major issue. I've sent off an email to Morimoto for their suggestions, but I may have to use my last open relay on my aux Bussmann fuse and relay box to add my own switch to disable this. Not ideal to say the least.

 

Another note (not to spam this thread) is that my lights were very much not 'factory adjusted', I had to bring mine up quite a bit to start (even on a truck that's got a 2.5" lift), and after this morning's drive (the first on the highway where I could really tell horizontal aiming) both were significantly off to the left. Getting to the horizontal adjusters is a pain, but loosening the battery tie-down and the wiper reservoir along with using a ratcheting wrench (even a 1/4" a socket and ratchet didn't fit in the space) I was able to bring them over. Will take another drive this weekend to see if it was enough.

There’s many other places to switch the fuse tap too, for instance the wipers, radio.

 

Close up view of the output along with my KC G4 fogs. Seems mine were aimed quite a bit off to the left, got them partially adjusted, but still need to bring the driver side further back to the right. Getting to that horizontal adjustment screw is a pain.

 

I saw those lights in-person a few days ago and they look really good on the 2nd gen

Note just how pathetically bad the uplight calibration is. Those vertical uplight boxes should sit seamlessly right ontop your low beam hot spots, just like OEM. But that separation at only a few feet from the wall easily tells the lights have beyond horrible manufacturing tolerances or are designed by a company that has no clue what they are doing. Unsure if these lights are produced by Morimoto's usual headlight supplier company of CoPlus or if they are another supplier, since Morimoto doesn't actually design or manufacture any products and just resells rebranded goods under their own brand name. But that wall shot should elude to serious design quality issues.

I can tell you the uplight is incorrect on mine and that video is wildly inaccurate in overstating the performance claims, as typical for an HR video trying to sell product with misleading advertising.

 

Anybody who believes something (anything) is 500% better than OEM (and street legal) needs to have their head examined. I mean, really?

 

That's disappointing.

My OEMs are pretty clouded at this point, even after a restoration.

Is there a product you recommend for second gens?
