Howdy all, wanted to introduce myself to the AK crew here since I will be there as of the end of April. My wife is USAF and we received orders to Elmendorf AFB. Hoping to find some meets, makes some friends and work on some trucks!

Current plans are to live either in South Anchorage, Eagle River or Wasilla. We'll be house hunting late April and early May, so any input on that would be more than welcomed. Can anyone recommend a good firearm forum for Alaska as well? I have a few hobbies and shooting is definitely one of them.

If you are going to buy a home, one of our members @Ghost. Works as a mortgage guy. He's not bad, although he does need to pick up his bike from my garage...

Do Air Force guys really call the base a campus, or is that referring to something else?

Not really, it's an old geezer civilian thing. In early days of the base computer network what we had was considered a "campus" network. Just stuck in my head.

Sorry for the delayed reply, been super busy trying to get things organized. We are looking into buying and I'll definitely contact Ghost to see what we can get done. We will be shipping both our vehicles and flying up since we have three dogs and flying them is just gonna be easier. I can't wait to get up there and drag this Tacoma all over the place and see what it can do. Hoping to do alot of hunting as well, I've been prepping for that too. The composite bed on this truck should clean up nicely LOL

I have a question for anyone that may have some insight. I will be shipping my Tacoma up there and was curious if anyone can recommend a shipping company? Quotes so far have hovered around $3,500 from here in VA to AK. I've called Alaska Auto Transport and a few other companies, any suggestions?

Are you bringing more than one vehicle? The Air Force should pay to ship at least one.

Yessir, we are bringing two and we've already scheduled the wife's Grand Cherokee through the base. They gave use the info of the company that ships them via the mil contract, but they are $300+ more than most everyone else.

Drive to Bellingham and take the ferry to Whittier. Air Force will cover the cost of the ferry, mileage on the vehicle you drive and per diem for each family member listed on orders.

That's what I've heard from everyone I talk to. Wife seems to want Wasilla since you get so much more house for the money there.

Wife refuses to do the ferry, wonder if I can do that part alone and still have it paid for?
