    Greetings Montana Tacoma Worldians!

I recently was accepted for a position with the dept. of the interior as a Park Ranger at a little National Monument outside Billings. This is sort of a dream come true for me and am super excited to begin this new journey.

I’m planning on living in Billings and commuting to work (about a 30 min drive) each day as almost all the available rentals are there.

After researching Billings, my girlfriend reported to me that Billings has a 90% higher violent crime rate as compared to the rest of the country  . Is this an accurate statistic?

One thing is for sure, the living is tremendously more affordable than Portland, OR (raised and currently living there).

Are there certain areas I should be looking at living in? Areas I should avoid?

Where are good places to eat? Get a beer?

Anything else I should know about Billings?

Anyone in the area want to be friends? :D

    Thanks!
    Ryan

There’s a Montana thread on here in the Northwest Forum, maybe chime in there and you might get some insight

    I have family in Billings...
There definitely is more crime there than most of the state but it also is MT's biggest city. More people = more crime. Drivers are horrible over there, keep your eyes peeled at all times.
Aim for the area around the west end of town and the zoo or the NE end of town in the Heights for housing. Newer, more family oriented housing.
There's lots of restaurants in Billings - be prepared to wait though. Everyone eats out, no one eats at home. Lots of chains and hole in the wall type places to choose from. Be prepared for the heat in the summer and the smell from the refineries.
    What NM? Pompey's? Or Bighorn?

    Here we go again!
The refinery’s smell like money! And yes the drivers here are something! But we raised a family here. Kids got a great public education and all got a college degree or graduated from a trade school. Go Griz! You have to take the good with the bad and make it your own.

Too much city for my taste - I prefer my pop. 10,000 Belgrade or 25,000 Butte any day.

Thanks all for the responses! Getting a better idea for what I’m in for. Comparing crime from where I’m coming from (Portland) it doesn’t seem to be much different.
Im looking at living in the heights area in particular- closer communte for me anyways.
I’ll be working at Pompeys Pillar. Really getting excited.

I'm in Billings it's not bad at all Bozeman traffic is worse than Billings these days.. Crime is pretty low compared to Portland. Hit me up when you're ready to go on a trail ride!
