I am moving to Seattle in a few months and will be looking for a place to live. I need to live within 30 minutes of Seattle Children's Hospital. I would like a 2 bedroom duplex or house or townhouse. I would prefer a yard and garage. Has to be a kid friendly neighborhood. My budget is around $1460/month. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

So if you are going to be working at Children's, a good place might be N. Seattle. Everything close to the hospital is expensive due to proximity to the U of W. The further north you travel, rent gets more reasonable. You can live as far north as Bothell/Kenmore without having to commute over one of the floating bridges. Since you are working in Seattle, it may be more convenient for you not to live on the Eastside.

Some of the areas like Ballard and Crown Hill are nice but traffic can be a bit of a cluster. The distance between Ballard and the hospital does not seem great but with traffic that route can really suck.

Most homes in these areas will not have a large yard but they will have a garage. East of Lake City Way is better for raising kids IMHO. Good luck and let us know if we can help with any more details.

Just be prepared for lots of traffic if you work durring the day and commute from the east side.

Im just in Ballard and love it, worked in Magnolia (only a few miles away) for a while and ill say if you have the money its a great little suburb to live.

I know theres a few of us in the ballard/ north seattle/ shoreline areas

What unit are you at now and what is your new unit? I live in Auburn. It's about 35 minute commute to base. There is a town home for rent in my neighborhood for 1400. Has a smallish yard and a 2 car garage in a nice neighborhood. Feel free to shoot me an email. Last name is moe in global at the msst here.

Thanks everyone for the help. I should clarify. I'm in the Coast Guard, so I will be working on base. The commute times definitely help with picking a place. My daughter was recently diagnosed with Leukemia, so I need to be able to reach Seattle Childrens rather quickly if a situation arises. If anyone can think of any other helpful details please let me know.

Moe: I'm not sure what unit I will be going to since I was just enrolled in the special needs program and Im in the process of being relocated. I wasn't due until 2015. I'm currently on the Spar. I'm a DC2, so no idea where I'm going yet. NESU, MAT?

Again thanks everyone for the replies. Also once I get situated I'm definitely down for some trail rides.

My wife and I just moved to Seattle (Fremont/Wallingford area) a few months ago, near where you're looking.

Couldn't score a yard within our budget, but happy with the area so far. Not sure I'd describe it as kid friendly (compared to the suburbs where I grew up), but there's several nice parks within a few blocks with plenty of green space and bike trails.

I'll vote for Issaquah as well. friendly town and lots of green, unlike the city now. redmond might also be a good option for you as well.
