My new wife and I are tired of California (and yes, I am aware of how much some Virginia's hate us) and we are looking at places in Roanoke. Just need to get some info out before all of the hating happens. I lived in Marion for six years from 2008-2015 with my previous wife. I graduated from Virginia Highlands Community College and have spent countless hours fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and camping around the SWVA area. I am fairly familiar with the state though I have not spent a lot of time in the Richmond, Shenandoah Valley, and Tidewater area.

Now, for the other stuff. I didn't have a truck last time I lived there so I am looking for like minded people to hangout with. Oh, and we are not liberals and we are not there to change your ways. We are moving to VA for the peace and calm it brings us and we plan on continuing the traditional VA ways as that what we love about the state. We will be buying a house hopefully before we move out in July.

Any help with the area or tips and advice are greatly welcomed.

I like Virginia especially around I81 and the I64 area. Attitude is everything today, sounds like you will fit right back in.

The Appalachian Mountains are calling me home. I’ve missed them and their way of life.

That's a beautiful part of the state. Why Roanoke, work? You also have other alternatives in that general area, like Christiansburg/Radford/Blacksburg. Floyd is a really neat small town. Now if you want to go further into the country, there are a lot more alternatives.

If you have kids, or are planning to have kids, should probably shop neighborhoods based on schools.

My wife teaches High School English. I need to be close to a VA hospital and I really like the convinces of leaving near a slightly bigger place. We bought a home in Garden City and cannot be happier with where we are going to be living.

I’ll actually be at our new house in the middle of March until the middle of April. We don’t officially move in until July though.

I'm jealous. I've lived in CA most of my life. I wanted to leave it for NE Tennessee for the same reasons as you, but my wife won't consider it. I fell in love with the area the first time I visited it almost 20 years ago. I swore I was going to live there someday......Some things go your way and some don't.

Born and raised in California. Other than being stationed over seas and in NM, and my 6 years in SWVA, I’ve always been here in Nor Cal and would come back to visit on vacations and holidays. I’m tired of California and the ways of people around here. This is not the state I loved a couple of decades ago. Virginia is very much an upgrade and I’m beside myself that I found someone that hates California as much or more than I do! We’ve vacationed over there three times in the last year, I spent many many days and weeks in Roanoke and Salem when I lived out there. And for my money, health and preferred lifestyle, I do not know of a better area for me. If I was healthy I’d likely get a farm somewhere a little more out of town, but since my meat suit is well abused, I need to be closer to town now a days. Like you mentioned, you win some and lose some and sometimes you call it a draw.

Nice! I pass through garden city pretty frequently. Ive always said its one of the prettiest little parts of Roanoke. There's some real hidden gems there. Im a plumber and most of my work is in roanoke so I am very familiar with the area. I'm in Franklin county about 20 minutes south. Let me know if you have any questions or anything!

Looking to get the tires dirty for a little bit. Drove Broad Run road the other day before it rained. Had a lot of fun crossing the creek. Hope to do more of that and some adventures in the area.

I might have to run that here soon. How was it? Just enough to be good and entertaining? Did you go just straight over or take any of the side trails?
