    eh?

I guess I can put you on that same pedestal as the other loud mouths over the last few days ranting about everything on the 3rd gen that doesn't fit YOUR needs. Toyota will never acknowledge you since your an outlier and not the 95% that it caters to.

if your so worried about mpg in your truck, go get another truck that isn't a Toyota. go get that ford ecoboost or dodge/gmc/etc diesel or v8 or v6.

I don't buy a Toyota for mpg I but it for the 4 reasons that the every day person has know Toyota for :

    1. reliability
    2. longevity
    3. durability
    4. resale

I could care less about the mpg, its a truck. the wife doesn't haul/pull or leave stuff in the bed and the last tank of gas was a whopping 8.2 mpg, the tank before 11.4, the one before that 12.5

as long as she is happy with the truck that's all that matters to me. and after showing her the new Tacoma, she cant wait to get one.

that is what Toyota catering too to make even more sales of Tacoma's, not the 1000-2000 that are complaining about how the new Tacoma sucks.

get over it, if not go to the other trucks.

I will just leave this here :)

There's no engine in the pic. I think you missed your snapshot.

Is this not the droids I am looking for?

Hmmm. Seriously, not sure if trolling. I'm staring right at it...

And here's the 2GR-FSE (from the opposite side) that I pulled from a PDF about D4-S. Engine has 90% of peak torque at 2k rpm btw. Not bad.

Edit: I guess I see some similarities, but they are certainly different. As Quentin pointed out, especially the top end.

Much better. I like, especially the side view breakdown. Still patiently waiting for the numbers. Thanks for posting.

    2GR-FSE[edit]

2GR-FSE engine in the 2008 Crown

The 2GR-FSE is a 3.5L engine used in the Lexus IS, GS 350, Mark X and Crown incorporate Toyota's latest D4-S twin injection fuel system. This system combines direct injection(949cc/min injectors) with traditional port injection (298cc/min injectors). Direct injection lowers the tendency to knock (detonation) and increases performance by reducing the charge intake temperature. Traditionally direct injection engines require an in engine mechanism such as swirl ports or specific piston crown shapes to increase tumble in the engine. These are in place to help achieve a homogeneous air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder at low rpm and high load, these mechanisms inhibit performance at higher rpm. In the 2GR-FSE the port injection is used considerably to achieve the correct mixture without having in engine restrictions, meaning the engine achieves specific power near the top of all naturally aspirated production gasoline engines in the world (67kW/L, 235kW in the Mark X). Toyota also developed a new type of injector for this engine. The dual fan spray pattern of the direct injectors is perpendicular to the piston travel with wide dispersion in the cylinder helping improve in cylinder mixing and therefore power and efficiency. The port injectors not only help improve the power and efficiency but they also help improve emissions especially in the first 20 seconds after start up (when the catalytic converter is in its warm up stage). Development of V-6 3.5-liter Engine Adopting New Direct Injection System

    The 2GR-FSE engine is rated at 309 PS (227 kW; 305 hp) at 6,400 RPM and 38.4 kg·m (377 N·m; 278 lb·ft) at 4,800 RPM. The 2GR-FSE in the Crown is rated at 315 PS (232 kW; 311 hp) and 38.4 kg·m (377 N·m; 278 lb·ft) at 4,800 RPM. The 2GR-FSE in the Mark X is rated at 318 PS (234 kW; 314 hp) and 38.7 kg·m (380 N·m; 280 lb·ft) at 4,800 RPM.
The engine's service weight is 174 kg.
    The 2GR-FSE was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.[3][4][5][6]

Yeah, I saw that someone added the Tacoma to the list. But anyone can do that and there is no source. My money is on a new 2GR-### designation. I base that on the speculation regarding the increased output planned for the GR engine production line recently. How about the 2GR-FTE? T for Tacoma or Truck? Heh.

Regardless of the MPG ratings there will still be threads complaining about them.

My thoughts exactly. My 2004 4Runner gets the same mileage as you, and i love how the mileage reading in the cab is always high 10%! If i can get 22with the new Tacoma, i would be thrilled!!!!

Well, the 2GR-FSE in my coworker's IS350 has aluminum head covers... and so does my mom's RAV4 2GR-FE. The engine shown in the presentation has plastic/resin head covers. That is a pretty substantial difference in construction. I also don't see the VVT control solenoids on top of the head covers like the normal GR family engines. It would be safe to say that they aren't the same engine.

this thread is awesome. Its awesome people are giving numbers even though I bet toyota engineers who are building the truck don't know MPG numbers at this point.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Top end does look significantly different. Are we seeing something entirely new, like the next evolution of VVT?

You make a valid observation. Is it your recommendation we split this into a clairvoyance thread? Because at this point, only people who can actually see the future are capable of providing the statistics we all crave.

If this truck had a diesel option, we wouldn't need to be trying to get excited about marginal improvements in mpg..

I think it's a mistake to not have parity to what Chevy offers on the Colorado.

There are threads dedicated to disappointment of not being offered a Diesel. We aren't getting one now. Time to move on.
Yeah this is all speculation, but I think 27 mpg is way too optimistic. Car companies make money by gradually improving things. Sometimes making BIG leaps in one generation means the following one will be not so impressive.
I think I threw the numbers 18 city, 24 highway and 20 combined. Slightly less for the manual.
I just hope the torque is not the exact same.
