TRD BAJA Suspension...Rims and tires, blackout badging, TRD oil filler cap, front skid plate, N-Fab step bars, GrillCraft custom upper and lower grills. K&N air filter, TRD Supercharger.
My prediction for the 3.5 mileage: 19 city....25 highway and a combined 22mpg with a 410:1. If they do go with a final drive of 430:1 then those numbers will change.

    Just my guess....

Honestly why the F would anyone buy a mid size truck that provides worse fuel economy than a full size. That is just pointless. Better MPG is the main benefit of a midsize IMO. Im waiting for the MPG numbers on the 2016 to come out but Toyota better step it up.

Because a mid sized truck isn't as big as a full sized truck. Easier to drive, easier to park, easier to take off road, will actually fit in parking garages that some full sized trucks won't fit in, you can actually grab stuff out of the box, etc.

Agreed. The twins have been having some quality issues. Don't want that parity.

You're right, if Toyota offered a Tacoma diesel & we all bought them.....

We'd have that extra free time to piss & moan about having to pay .50 to .75 cents more per gal for a fuel that should be cheaper than gasoline.

We'd be using that time to talk about how having to buy things like diesel emissions fluid, fuel filters, extra quarts of oil etc sucks.

We'd be talking about how we got water in our fuel (causing us to wait for a wrecker &/or having to foot the bill for repairs because water in fuel damage isn't a covered warranty condition) or... We'd be talking about how to avoid buying fuel that has water in it.

We could have a lot of extra time to talk about when we finally broke out a calculator & figured out price of fuel, diesel vehicle 'up charge', mileage driven per year, & maintenance items required on our diesel how sucky we felt because we learned that we'd never come out ahead monetarily.

Disclaimer: I've owned some diesel truck continuously for well over a decade now. I also owned a VW diesel car back in the late 80s.

I fully understand why Toyota USA isn't going down the light diesel road. The vast majority of Tacoma target buying public doesn't need & is not demanding a diesel Tacoma.

Who knows? Be nice to see the highway rpm's at 70 to be around 1600 or so. That would be an improvement. Right now at 70 mine is 2000 rpm's.

Do you propose to get that with a more complex/expensive transmission to drop the gearing?

A different rear gear with resulting low end grunt loss?

    A two speed rear?

An auxiliary bolt on OD unit (ie Gear Vendors OD) ?

Every choice made in any 'build' is a compromise of something else.

Why? Reasons are simple. Fuel efficiency costs money. Fuel efficient engines have more parts and R&D costs.
Look at all the cheapest cars you can get today. A Yaris, Fiesta, Fit etc. Their MPG figures are not that impressive. They get DECENT mpg because they weight little but their engines are relatively simple. Do you think Toyota would let the $12k Yaris get more MPG than their darling, the $27k Prius?
Another reason is most companies want to lure you into a more profitable full-size if they can. They will offer you that smaller, less profitable truck if you want, but if you want a high-tech motor, you will have to pay up for a full-size.

Except we don't know it is the 2GR-FSE...someone prematurely put that there. The variant of 2GR-FSE speculation I think is just based on loose evidence like production line increases at the GR facility. The product manager specifically called it a "truck line engine" in a video interview. For all we actually know, it could be a different GR with new Otto/Atkinson cycle valvetrain, D4-S, and a unicorn.

The 2GR-FSE fits for some speculative points, but it is definitely not the exact engine. Just look at the pics I posted earlier.

    Cheers

I spoke with a Toyota rep at the North American International Auto Show about the new Tacoma. He asked me what I was expecting regarding mpg. I told him that it would have to get at least 3-4 mpg better than the current generation for me to consider it. His response was interesting. He indicated that I was going to be very surprised because the 2016 model would surpass my "minimum of 3-4 mpg" improvement. So my predication is that there will be at least a 5 mpg improvement.

Just to put it in perspective, the Tacoma needs a 5mpg improvement to simply match the '15 GMC Canyon mpg highway: 2015 Tacoma V6 4WD: 15/19 mpg 2015 Canyon V6 4WD: 17/24 mpg
