Also, Toyota realizes this is a mid-sized truck. Although all trucks are getting ridiculously expensive, most Tacoma buyers aren't going to want to pay gobs of extra cash for efficiency technology. It will be a small increase, which is fine. If I really needed a 50+ mpg automobile, I'd just get a Prius. I have a Tacoma for the utility.

Stepdad owns one. 14 MPG all day, granted with larger tires and rims.
    LOL! +1

Laughing stock of the world for their $21,000 model not getting 1 MPG better than Ram's $30,000 Eco-Diesel? I'm not even going to state why that is wrong.

Have fun with that DI engine at 60K when all that carbon build up needs to be cleaned off the cylinder heads.

EPA estimates are BS anyway. Lets wait til the end of the year when some 16's are pushing 10k miles and then get some non embellished numbers. If you're really itching for some numbers go to the Colorado forum and see what they're getting because the 2.6 gen isn't gonna get any better.

I think the Tacoma is dead on with it's estimates. Other trucks seem to be way below. What are they getting on the Colorado forum? I think the 2016 Tacoma will at LEAST be on par with Chevy, if not better.

naw thats why toyota does standard port injection in pair with DI so carbon buildup isnt much of an issue.

There are too many F150 configurations to count, so without more info this is useless. That sounds like V8 4X4 mileage to me, but you're keeping that bit a secret;). If you are comparing, it should be apples:apples.

The new F150 advertises 28 mpg highway; that's a 4X2 with the eco-whatever 2.7 turbo 6 cyl I believe. That should be Toys benchmark for a similar taco (6 cyl prerunner). 30mpg would be outstanding, but given they gave the snout of the new taco the aerodynamics of a picnic table, it's probably not likely.

I think we are making a mistake by not differentiating, continually between 2 wd and 4 wd.

We can't emphasize enough that 40% of the drag which affects mileage dramatically at cruising soeeds, the high number that everyone likes to quote, is the under carriage. That's why a Prius is so low to the ground. That funky little valance in the front of newer trucks will not magically do away with the drag a 4 wd truck has by nature of it's higher clearance.

I had an 89 xtra cab 2 wd old tech v6 that I lowered slightly. It got highway mileage nearly equal to any 2 wd 4 cylinder I had previously and better then any 4 wd, 4 or 6 cylinder I had since. That's how important height is.

Over 52% of mid size trucks and 70% of full size trucks are sold with 4 wd.. 2 wd trucks will do substantially better, even if you disregard the weight and mechanical drag penalty; aerodynamics at cruising speeds take a big toll. I suspect that the new motor will be outstanding in 2 wd if you forget any jacked up pre runner package and only a marginally better in 4 wd on the highway.

For new v6, 4 wd trucks......about 24-25 tops highway and 2wd trucks could go as high as 27 to 28 mpg. highway. You will find, IMho, that this motor will do better then the 4 cylinder in 4 wd. Heck, they are nearly the same now ! So, 4 cylinders will only show a slight advantage in the 2 wd version.
Remember too, longer trucks like the F150 which are now lighter then they used to be, have better aerodynamics then shorter trucks ( everything else being equal ;-))

So, if the 2wd F150 is a target, it will be hard to achieve with a 4 wd Tacoma.

My 06 DCSB V6 6-speed wasn't very good. Never hit epa #s. That's what you get living in Seattle I guess.

I haven't looked on the Colorado forums too much, there's not that much out there. Alot of those guys have only a few hundred to a few thousand miles.

    http://coloradofans.com/forums/161-...canyon-reviews/226706-15-000-mile-review.html

That guy writes a pretty good little 15000 mile non fanboy review. 20+ lifetime mpg in winter, not bad.

Don't expect a 2016 DCLB 4x4 Tacoma to do any better. Similar engine setup, similar 6-speed trans, similar size and weight and Toyota is notorious for making less than stellar mpg trucks.

Would be great, if they didn't have to use DEF. then again...it is a diesel world here in Idaho...I can't run down the interstate with the fresh air vent open without being fumed out. *cough-cough*

I'm hoping for 23 or 24 highway for the 4x4 dub cab long bed. That seems realistic to me. My guesses -

    2.7 2wd 5 lug - 22/28
    3.5 prerunner - 19/24
    3.5 4x4 - 18/23

Who the hell cares? You need to fill the DEF tank every, what, 10k miles? It's something ridiculous like .001 cents per mile. You'd bitch about filling DEF but would be fine going to the gas pump more often. Go figure lol.

I'm hoping for a bit more actually. I'm hoping for at least 25mpg highway. If they can't deliver that they've failed.

Ahh. Ok I must had missed that, so it's like a hybrid DI engine essentially. You get the best of both worlds. The cleaning benefits of standard port injection (which will allow fuel to clean the backside of the valves) and DI, in which we know the obvious benefits of that. Looks like it will be, or already is, a good engine after all!

There's also the 3-5K premium to pay for diesel and a guaranteed higher cost per gallon. Diesel imo is only justified if you need the extra power to haul things. It's not a money saver.

What's funny is, some will buy the new Taco for 3 more mpg then loose it all by putting on high drag oversize tires with aggressive treads they never use. My bro in law, great guy, but he bought a 4 cylinder 4 wd standard cab because it was more economical, then promptly put on oversized off road AT tires. I don't think it gets above 20'mpg highway. He lives in Georgia never goes off road but loves the truck. When I visit him it's my drive around car. I'm constantly filling it up. It feels like you are driving in mud all the time the drag is so great on the little four. It seems like driving in high gear can only be done going down hill or with the wind.
