MPG Estimates for 2016?

Well as for the new ones, that's not such a bad idea. You're taking the same MPG loss from the mods from your 2nd gen and transferring them to a more efficient truck. The overall will still be better. But that's no reason to take on a note.

 

Filling the DEF tank would be like washer fluid...easy peasy. However, I was thinking more on the lines the initial upcharge of the system, and replacement cost when it goes. Since, I usually hang onto vehicles for 10-15 years, so overall cost of ownership is what I am looking at.

 

I am tempted to go larger with 265-75/16 on my Taco. What prevents me is, the darn thing is only running at 2k rpm at over 70 mph. So, I put on larger tires, increase the drag and change the effective final drive for the worse, make the engine lug even more and decrease mileage....why ? To look prettier ? WTH cares.

I learned a long time age that "most people spend most of their time not looking or even caring what I do " specially with a truck.

how much mpg for braaaaping away? I get 16-18 now....so id hope itd get the same, and more more braaap.

 

Ha! In my 40's...had my current Tacoma for 13 years now, just turned 296K miles on it...still going strong too. Plan on keeping it, when I get my new one.

Still undecided what to get...waiting to see what the '16 Taco is like in person. I dunno, still have thing for the 1st gens. Saw a cherry '02 on the way home from work today. Probably a good thing it was an automatic...or I it might of come home with me.

 

Most people like tall gearing. What's wrong with 2K RPM? I drive 55-60 at all times unless I'm late so I'm always at 1800 RPM. The drag from tires isn't that much. Not to mention I went from a 3" lowering kit to a 2.5" lift and lost only 1 MPG. Switching from street tires with 20" chrome wheels to LRR highway tires with 16" wheels gave me almost 2 MPG and I went up a size to 265/75R16.

If your only reason for bigger tires is to make it look nicer, then do not do it. It sounds like that's not important to you. I needed new tires, hated the wheels, and wanted a lift so it seemed right to go 265/75R16 for me. When these tires go out in about 70K miles I'll probably get 33"s just for looks and offroading. I'll have the means to do that in about 5 years.

 

Many thanks for your experience. Did you also up size your spare ? With 4 wd, I could not afford to "mess around" not having all the wheels, including the spare, with the same circumference.

Oh not at all.
No sir I did not. Kept factory spare. Then I decided if I ever needed it, under the truck would not be where I wanted it to be. So I took it out (which was more difficult than I would EVER like to deal with on a rainy night on the side of the road) to put it in the bed and it was beyond practical and safe use. So I bought a spare from a friend, 285/75/16. It's one size bigger but should be close enough to get home on. I might buy another one for offroading to swap out. I am 2wd.

 

Heck, I would kill for a truck that averaged 20 mpg in northern NE where our temps for February NEVER got above an average of 6 degrees per day.

 

That means, with 4 wd I neeed to consider five tires. Because I change over to snows in the winter( live on a 1.5 mile mountain road in northern NE) I would have to like wise make sure the winters were all the same. That means an additional rim as well. I need 4 wd every day during the winter months. I am beginning to rethink my plan. The garage is already filled with tires and Boats.

 

I'm sorry, I can't find a previous post, what is your plan exactly? is there a problem you're trying to solve?

Not to mention the 2nd gen is already rated for 21/25. LOL
But then again since the most efficient option is what's advertised, and the 4cyl isn't being changed... The advertised MPG won't change. We can just hope that the V6 numbers get as close to the 4cyl as possible, although I would like to see 26 just to +1 Government motors...

 

Until TW members get a hold of their trucks and put +3" lifts with +33" tires, then it's back to 15 MPG and multiple TW threads bitching about crappy MPG's..
