Type P0440 in the search function...lots of solutions on there, but the jist is to inspect your entire fuel/evap system. Check all rubber hoses for cracks and leaks, check your charcoal canister, etc...

I've searched and searched and read everything I can. For what I have in the truck I don't feel like spending $300 on a charcoal canister. I'm willing to replace just about anything else within reason. There may come a day when it's worth a charcoal canister to not have the code but today is not that day. :D

Mine at least has cruise control!

Plan on doing this TSB. Maybe tomorrow if I can find some flex seal locally.

Try going to a U-pull junkyard. Probably you can get the canister cheap and get practice removing it on a vehicle you don't own.

Well, maybe just inspect everything before you start buying parts. Might be a cracked hose that costs $1

Definitely plan to do some more research and troubleshooting. I have a vacuum gauge coming to try and troubleshoot some valves and/or where the leak is.

If I need a canister I might go that route. Hard to find time to disappear into a junkyard for a day with 2 kiddos, but once baseball season is over I might have some more time.

You tell those kids you don't have time for baseball, you have a Toyota to build! Of course i'm joking:)

More like tell my wife! The kids are pretty good and probably won't get too hurt or lost if I'm not watching them constantly. :D

Spend as much time as you can with them now, they grow up so fast! My son just bought a house this past friday. It seems like just yesterday i was teaching him how to ride a bike and now he's moved into his own house.

Oh I definitely spend as much time as possible with those kiddos. I make a rare exception for things that I can’t take them to like shooting IDPA. The 9 year old shoots rimfire steel with me and the wife does too. Already have a setup for the 3 year old too.

I’m always down for shooting. I worked part time for a local gun shop until business slowed down for the “trump slump” so I stocked my safe when I had the discount. I don’t get out as much as I’d like. I mostly shoot matches and occasionally pop out to my mother in laws farm for a little plinking.

    Back to truck stuff....

Got all motivated on my way home and stopped and picked up some spark plugs and a fuel filter. Keeping with the lack of previous maintenance theme... I think these plugs were original 167,000 mile plugs. AE65557E-6292-4D27-A97A-D48B3967DCB7.jpgFCFA91C8-6DB8-4683-8E6E-3797DE9A7577.jpg
    E9F6AAA2-12CF-4079-9D56-B27F1A2C530F.jpg

My helper was out with me through the first plug. Guess I’m boring.
    B5081954-3709-4A10-9677-1036D5BC40D4.jpg

My only thoughts after doing the plugs are its a testament to how unkillable these trucks are. Also, there’s nowhere inside that engine bay to set stuff down. They should have designed in more flat surfaces for the mechanics. On my old F250 I had acres of space to set tools.

Excited to take it for a spin tomorrow and see if there’s improvement. I can’t see how it could not be a huge difference.

Bit of a good news bad new situation today.

First off my power steering fluid flush and fill went pretty well. Used the fluid extractor to suck out everything in the reservoir then I popped the reservoir off to check the screen. It was pretty clean but I cleaned it out anyway to be sure. Jammed the fluid extractor into the return hose and basically emptied the system. Then ran some good fluid through it by plugging the reservoir with my finger and spilling ATF all over the place while I tried to fill and pump the extractor at the same time. It worked but there are definitely cleaner ways to do it.

Helper girl was out in full swing for me to diagnose the leak in the cab.
    449A9D2F-EF71-4FE0-9D5F-D30405EDE06B.jpg

Pulled the carpet up and it was damp. Which is crazy to me since it hasn’t rained for over a week. But made a nice discovery of some fungus growing under the carpet.
    89392E0E-7EF1-43E1-8FAD-487FFD9BA56B.jpg
Hard to see but the floor was wet.
    34DE88DE-5E07-4C7C-B872-6236E9801A4E.jpg

Hosed down the cowl area trying to find any evidence of water leaking in. Nothing. No sign of anything running down the firewall either. At this point I was getting frustrated. Whatever I’m pulling the cowl anyway. So that was nasty.
    81F2C659-E9A4-4C1A-ADF9-DFA3F09A764B.jpg 86358E61-1ADB-45ED-8705-D7C29F52C761.jpg

Pulled the wiper motor and linkages off. It took me far too long to figure out how to get the linkage off the motor. Sprayed water all in the cowl and everything. Looked back in the truck expecting to see crap running down the firewall at this point annnnnnd nope.

But wait! What’s that in the corner? 4C87BE07-3802-4958-9A92-1BCD477C4F9D.jpg4986CCCD-F4F8-4FA5-9D1E-552F16BB2B69.jpg

If you look close at this picture you can see the antenna wire is dripping. Right above the relay and below the heater box.

    C2052110-EFC8-4FC7-B94E-67C4EAD41F7B.jpg

Feeling around, I think the leak is only coming from where the antenna passes through the side of the cab. At least I’m hoping. So the good news is I found my leak! The bad news is that I might have done all that work to take off the cowl for nothing.

Taking a lunch break with small right now and maybe I’ll figure it out while she’s napping.

Making progress is never bad news. If you knew where to look for the mysterious leak then you wouldn't have to search for it.

Sort of like the statement you make when you lose something. "I always find what I am looking for in the last place I looked for it." That statement never made sense to me. Why would you keep looking once you found it? So of course you find it in the last place you looked for it.

Well the crappy part is that’s definitely not the leak. Sprayed really good under the cowl and there’s about a river coming in. And not through that grommet. So it looks like that can of flex seal wasn’t a waste after all. Pulled the flare and the fender liner. Of course broke clips along the way. So now I need to order those. Got to the grommet on the outside and while there may have been a tiny bit leaking in there, it wasn’t the source. That’s above the heater core.
    DA1C88B8-3BEE-40ED-BE39-FE46FDDC790A.jpg

Decided I was going to pull the fender to get in the opening in the cowl under the fender because that’s where the leak seems to be coming from. Promptly broke my corner light. I knew it was crappy anyway because of how it looked inside but the lens was barely on the housing and I broke the top tab. 47E7D44F-60CD-4DF3-9CF0-70F1CD6DF0A3.jpg
    995598ED-6C0B-42A3-B0CC-76EF316A8F7F.jpg

And just to make it all come together... a previous owner obviously super glued the rubber strip on the fender flare to the fender. I’m guessing because it was popping out and they couldn’t get it to stay down. 48F93EF4-8877-44A8-B6C0-EAEE9D0A32A7.jpg

Here it is after I cleaned it up and a couple shots of the factory paint under the flare versus the rattle can job that’s on the majority of the truck.

    BC10B9B8-4EB9-4B4F-86EF-A29495597C63.jpg

Kiddo is napping and should be waking up soon so that’s about as far as I’m getting today without being a negligent father. I’ll probably sit here and order up some replacement clips for the flares and look into some new headlights and corner lamps. Glad I didn’t buy that new rear bumper I was debating!
