Hello all! I know I'll catch flack for this post but I need to vent. I've been lurking these forums for a year or so now. I have a 2017 TRD sport that I got new last September. I got it on trade from my old Frontier. I am highly disappointed with this truck so far after 9,500 miles. I've had to take a lot of service visits to get issues fixed which I never had with my frontier. Now I found out there's a massive recall, the safety issue where rear ends are locking up and I saw a few folks here crash their truck because it locked up on them! I don't feel safe in this truck with my family. I went out and looked and my rear differential appears it is leaking! I had some type of sensor that went out and put the truck on the side of the highway not 6 months after buying it. I had to call and have it towed to the dealer.

I thought for sure all of the problems would be fixed after the 2016 bugs were ironed out. Now get this! My wife has a Rav4 and we have not one single problem with it and all you hear is how great and reliable Toyota is so we went to Toyota for my trade.

So I have other problems. The truck has a chirp like crickets under the hood at idle which I read here might be the high pressure fuel pump. Is this really normal or do I need to get this fixed? It is getting louder because I don't feel like I noticed it before now. I have a rear howling roar that I've seen many others complain about here yet Toyota says it's normal and in other cases people have had their rear diff entirely replaced!!! I've never heard a rear differential like this on any other vehicle i have owned including my old frontier. Garbage!

Finally the truck feels under powered and does not shift well at all yet I've had several software updates and it just goes back to crap every time. I noticed this on the test drive and I thought this would get better after break in but I'm still getting 18MPG average and I drive like a grannie. Our rav4 has much more power on demand when you press the pedal down she goes and gets great MPGs! This truck you have to really put the pedal down then the motor sounds like its a street bike and it shifts like crap! I have a clunk in the rear when coming to a stop. They don't know what it is either.

Do you think the 2018 might be better? I have lost faith in Toyota for these trucks. I saw that consumer reports gave them very poor ratings and I have to agree.

I think I might trade this one out. I really like the Tacoma for the looks over my old frontier and a full size is too big but I don't know what else to go with. Also this is going to cost me a ton of money to get out of this truck I still owe over 35,000 on it and trade values are in the dumper. I feel like I got bent over and screwed by Toyota here.

those are all pretty common issues on the 2016/2017. I dont think 2018 will be any different. But how the hell did you get it on a trade in last September and still owe over 35k on a Sport?

Yes I think I paid too much for this truck it was about 40k and I financed 84 months at 4% not the best idea I know but wanted to keep payments low and figured i would keep this truck until the wheels rust off.

Toyota has a department that deals with buy-backs and lemons. See what they will give you and look at a different truck.

For a Sport? Good Lord. I've seen ORs out the door for less than that. And with a trade too? You must not have haggled at all. Ouch.

    Sounds like you screwed yourself.

Dump it if you need to but it sounds like you've only had one issue so far that got fixed. Otherwise be ready to take a hit on another trade but at least you'll be happy.

Damn, sorry man that is really rough. That puts you in way too deep to get out. Might as well ride it out and try to make it a 15, 20 year truck.

Keep everything documented at the dealer. All problems you have get them documented and make sure the copy they give you makes sense and accurately depicts your issue. If it doesnt, ask them to be more clear.

At least with that you'll have a history and evidence if things go south past your warranty period. They may be willing to help you if you can prove you were having the issue documented before your warranty expired.

Do you think I need to get this fuel pump changed out because the chirping doesn't seem normal at all to me. Also I run only shell nitro 91 octane and I thought high octane would help solve the issue but it does not.

You would think after a year or two that Toyota would have the problems fixed but they just keep putting out the same crap it seems like! Very frustrating! I think they have really let their reputation slip. I can't help but to think these recalls and bad ratings and bad reviews may burn the resale value on my Tacoma in the next few years.

Second gen trucks came out in 2005, and the 2017 shares issues with them. That's 12 years.

The 2015s were the last of the second gen, and had those issues too.
