my new taco came with 245/65/16

I have 245/23/16.5 on 16" rim

 

I guess I am the bone head thinking that they put the /16's for a reason.

 

I tire can be 2" larger or smaller than a rims width but the diameter can't vary 1".

Reading a Tire:

All tires are required to have certain information molded into the side of the tire in a location known as the sidewall. Some of the information is self explanatory while other information requires a little knowledge to decipher. The following will help you understand what this information means.

Tire Type - This Defines the intended proper use of the tire. P indicates this is a passenger car tire while LT indicates the tire would be for a light truck with a heavier load rating.

Tire Width - This is the width of the tire measured in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. An example might be 215 representing 215 millimeters.

Aspect Ratio - This is the the ratio of the height of the tire's cross-section to its width. An example of this might be 65, which means that the height is equal to 65% of the tire's width. To calculate the aspect ratio, multiple the first number (e.g. 215) by the second number with a decimal before the number (e.g. .65). Using the example numbers the tires aspect ratio would calculate as 215x.65=139.75 where 139.75 is the tires height in millimeters. This is the height of the rubber from rim to tread on one side of the tire.

To convert the aspect ratio to a full tire height in inches, do this:
Convert the above calculated tire height (aspect ratio) in millimeters to inches by multiplying the millimeters by .03937 (139.75 x .03937 = 5.5 inches). Then take the inches and multiply by two and add the rim size. Example: 5.5 x 2 + 15 (rim size in inches) = a 26 inch tall tire.

Construction - This indicates how the how the tire was put together and will say much about the tires handling characteristics. R indicates the tire is a radial type tire. Wheel Diameter - This is the width of the opening in the tire where it would be mounted to a wheel. This is measured from one bead across the opening to the other side of the same bead. This measurement is in inches and an example would be 15 and indicates that this tire is for a 15 inch rim, or wheel.

Load Index - This is a number corresponds to the maximum load in pounds that a tire can support when properly inflated. You will also find the maximum load in pounds and in kilograms molded elsewhere on the tire sidewall.​

I could be wrong in thinking this, but I think what he is saying is that he measured the actual hole in the middle of the tire, and did not include the "overlap" of where the tire rests on the wheel. There is going to be roughly 1/2 to 3/4s of an inch of overlap, which means a tire with an actual hole in 15 inches will of course fit a 16 inch wheel.

Or I am wrong... and this guy is actually trying to put a 15 inch tire on a 16 inch wheel.

 

I agree with what you have said but that is not how it works when you are buying a tire. Especially since he posted a link to a site that he claims will learn us something. As you can see from my above post his site agrees with the majority here. In which case he can learn something from us here and we can help him as much as he will allow. Because the lord knows we are willing.

 

I think he is actually going to mount a 15 inch wheel on a 16 inch rim. I guess he will find out when he takes it to the tire store and they explain it to him.

To me it makes sense that designations on a tire are there for a reason. A tire is not numbered "235/75/15 maybe 16" on the side wall

 

First of all, the OP is having trouble reading his stock size. 245-75 x 16s is the stock size. The only 65 series tire is the 265-65 x 17 on the TRD Sport.

Having just done some tire work, 16, 15 & 17, and having worked tires when I was a pump jockey in '71-'75, I can tell you, as prior posters have said, you will NEVER get a 15" on a 16" rim, and if you do, it will not seat on the rim correctly, and if you "make it" fit, it will fail in short order.

You can get a 16" on a 15" rim, and if the overall diameter is enough to let it "seat", it will roll off the wheel in short order, if it doesn't blow out as soon as you put weight on it.

Back to the OP: 31-10.50 x 15s will not fit on a Taco that came with 16s stock--even if you buy 15" wheels. They won't clear the front brake caliper. They will fit only on a 5 lugger, and that would probably require a lift.

 

Thanks for the reply. I had a completly different question and it turned into you guys letting me know that Firestone ordered the wrong size tire for me. this does not rest easily with me as I feel like a kid on Christmas morning waiting on these tires. Will call them in the morning and have to tell them how to do their job.
