So does the gym manager have access to the tapes ? And are there cameras in the parking lot? Should take all of 5 min to find out who did this … as this person likely has a photo ID to set up and check into the gym.

Try Google crime rates in USA. Mentioned states don't even make top 10

The people who do this stuff do it with intention. The ID/credit card they used to sign up is fake or stolen.

Even if it was their own ID (with their home address and everything), good luck getting the cops to do anything. The cops wouldn't even show up when the incident happened, you think they are going to do any sort of investigating?

all the kids I know can drive a manual, there are dorks in every generation that can't drive stick. It is lucky for you that you seem to have gotten the loser of car thieves trying to steal your car.

I think the gym manager would love to not have thiefs at his/her gym. Don't think the cops will give a shit which is why I was mentioning the gym manager specifically.

Check your states laws before installation. (Aka do not install one of these, I’m sure it’s highly illegal in any civilized country)

Joking aside, you mentioned San Jose. Best option to avoid car theft/break ins is move.

But if you cannot move, keep the key on your person at all times. Security cameras with motion detectors at home. Maintain good insurance. You can’t catch every angle, especially in San Jose.

Those same cities within those states also refuse to write reports. It's liked being shocked they don't do extra work to show how poorly they are doing :D. Of course we know who doesn't want the real numbers out there.

Leave the nice car garaged in Houston. Drive a comfy, high MPG beater that noone cares about, if you're commuting across country.

    Just getting started.
It's not just CA PD that won't lift a finger. Here in Texas my car (pre-Tacoma) was broken into and they found a backup credit card I had left in the center console which they then used at the QT down the street for about $400 in gas and goodies. I had the exact time and location the card was used and the QT manager said the PD only had to call them to get the footage of the thieves but the cops didn't even bother to make the call. Freaking lazy.

Back in 1992 I had someone use my credit card. I knew who it was and had all manner of proof. Cops said if it was less than $1,000 they wouldn't do anything about it.

Those Club things are not expensive, and any thief knows how to disable it but it takes time, that is an enemy to them so they will just go to the next target.

Seems to me video footage of the perp would be available inside that Gym and outside in the lot.

Heck, my credit card has been hacked, and used so many times over the years, by who knows who, I can't count how many news ones that I was given. Seems since Amazon came about, its when it got far worse. You gotta keep a close record of all expenses when using a credit card, and inspect all charges when you get the monthly statement.

I live in the Chicago area burbs. Chicago down rates their crimes, some serious crimes are now misdemeanors. Ist degree is downgraded to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc. We had 50+ peeps shot and 11 toasted over this weekend. There are shootings that don't get reported. Shootings on the highways are not counted in those numbers. Maybe not top 10, only because the numbers get fudged. I avoid the city like the plague.

Yes. My truck was stolen and I got it back. I asked the cops, dealer and insurance people and they all said the same thing - it reduces the chances of it getting stolen. Put it on the BACK side of the wheel and that makes it longer to defeat because the only other ways will make a lot of noise. Not all vehicles can put it on the back side of the wheel but we can.
At home I bought a remote doorbell off of Amazon and I put a detector on the QI charger and the ringer is in my bedroom.

My wife was almost carjacked last week. She was leaving the parking lot and a van pulled up behind her, blocking her, she got away by pulling forward out of the parking space over the concrete bump stop and onto the sidewalk.

She called 911 and told them what happened, and they asked where she was and she said that she ran away and she’s going home right now and they didn’t seem very interested about going to the scene of the crime.

When she got to work the next day, they checked the footage, and there were no cop cars after the van left.

They’re trying to submit the video to the police department, but no one really seems to be that interested about receiving it.

That's every precinct in every state. I've never had a good experience with a cop, and I've met more than a few in about every type of municipality.
