Who saw that episode when they tested air drag on cars??

The One where they turned an escort? into a golf ball to reduce drag.

Damn that shit was clever. Even with the added weight of the clay they were getting crazy results.

I think they said something like 11% increase of gas mileage.

and i was surprised of the fact that having mud on the truck makes it less fuel efficient, i didnt think it would be that durastic.

Mostly stock for now, I have added a cb radio, various cheap mods and I plan on adding aftermarket wheels and other items in the future.
Yeah I saw that episode, I knew about why they did that with golf balls, but I never thought it would have helped on a car.

But I think if they would have taken the car out and did some city driving, it would have had the opposite effect. Because of the weight, with all of that clay.

I would have also liked to see them drive it on the highway and see how far they can get on a full tank of fuel vs. no clay

There is also an episode that test if you get better MPG by driving with your tailgate down. Absolutely NOT true, you actually get better MPG with the tail gate UP!! I laugh when i see people on the highway with the tail down!

They should do one on Tacoma sheet metal. How it can take a meteor impact on a commerical. But yet, can be dented by a falling acorn :D.

Makes me wonder why NASCAR hasn't come up with a fiberglass body with those dimples ad use it on a car.

The point isn't about testing clay vs no clay, it's about the shape of the car, the golf ball shape. They tested it with clay so they could put whatever shape they wanted on the car, they tested it with the clay untouched, and with the clay with holes in it, the leftovers being on the back seat. The comparison between clay without holes and clay with holes was significant.

The point of this experiment was to see if the myth actually works, and it does.
Knowing that, someone with a budget could replace the panels with handmade ones and the gas saved would pay the bill very quickly.

Sure it would look like shit, but it works and the point of the Mythbusters is to discover that.

Now I'd like to see if a car full of bullet holes would improve something, apart from preventing the engine from overheating. :D

Yeah i thought the concept was pretty cool.

The Golf ball divots on their car were proportionate to the size or the car. IF the same results could be accomplished with divots the same size as that found on a golf ball then we might be on to something.

Think about it, you could layer something under the paint before application.

Heard a story once that sometime in the sixties Richard Petty showed up with golf ball dimples in the roof. Had the officials so flustered trying to figure out if it was legal or not that they missed all of the other illegal parts on the car. My understanding is that he won the race by a ridiculous margin.
