I WISH. There is a group of guys from our local club that are going down. I need a lot more work on the truck such as armour and sliders etc: before I go down. Maybe next year.

I assume you will going? Hope you take lots of pic's. I hear from the guys here who have gone in the past that it is just incredible.

ya everyone that i have talked to says that ak is amazing so i have high hopes, i have always wanted to go to ak and now im gana get paid pretty decent money to do it. thanks for the info ill look into those tires although i did find some STs from discount tire zone, im just trying to go for the cheapest conscidering i have to buy two sets. i guess in kodiak its pretty much manditory to have studded tires during the winter months, so i need some and set for my wifes jeep commander as well.

and i have a few questions since i have never had to have studded tires before, ive driven in snow a bunch just not with studded tires.... now when you buy the tires do they come with the studs too or do i have to go to a tire shop and get them put in? and once they are in can i take them out during the spring time so i dont have to have 2 sets of tires?

I plan to go it should be a really good time I have been through Moab several times but this will be the first time to wheel.

I really enjoyed my time in AK it was for work as well and ended up being a great way to see the place. I grew up driving in the snow as well and have always run all terain or mud terrain tires year round until living in AK.

You can get tires that are a studded winter tire or you can get tires that are "pinned" which are generally an all terrain (A/T) that can be studded by a tire shop or there are studless winter tires. AK has laws that state when you can run studded tires (Oct-Apr can't remember exactly and it may be different in other parts of the state) so they have to be swapped out vs studless that can be run year round but most people swap them as well due to them being a softer compound that wears faster. So it can be a total pain in the ass dealing with it.

    A. you are mounting and unmounting 2 sets of tires on one set of rims
    B. you are swapping out complete wheelsets
    C. you are wearing out studless winter tires.
    D. Run one set of good AT's and really pay attention

I personally liked having 2 sets mounted on wheels and changing them out myself in the driveway it was more expensive up front but the convenience of not dealing with a tire shop was priceless. I thought this was a pretty good link. http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=151

Ya I was thinking of going with either hankook dynapro mts, cooper discovery st maxx, or Goodyear duratrack. All of hem are mud or all terrain and all can be pinned. Now since theses all can be pinned will they wear faster than a normal AT/MT and how hard is it to de-pin them? Trying to do the cheapest because I have to get a set for my truck and the wifes commander too.

All the tires you listed should be fine and will wear the same with or without studs. You can pull studs out there are a few tools to do that but from what I understand once you do that you cannot re-stud them. You may want to look at siping http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/tireSiping.dos your tires you can run them year round. My coopers were studded and siped and performed well but a set of wintermark tires I had performed better with the compound being softer.

Thanks, problem is I got more plans than money...

I haven't had much time for the truck lately other than driving it. I turned 90K on it last weekend so I changed the oil and rotated the tires. Here is a comparision pic of the TSL's new one compared to drivers front after 5k.

Brought the MTR's out of retirement yesterday, my plan was to come up with a set of tires for a set of stock steelies I have to use as my commuter set currently I have about a 60 mile commute 5 days a week for the next couple months. So I was pricing tires and came across a set of 16x8 Raceline renegades that the MTRs would fit on and they were pretty cheap 9.00$ more a wheel than black 16x8 steelies. To breathe a little new life into the MTRs I had them siped so they are like a super burly AT now. I like the swampers looks on the TRD wheels way better than these but they will work for now and keep the swampers fresh for when I don't have the long commute.

If anyone knows of a good rattle can bronze paint let me know as I think I want to paint these wheels.

The Les Schwab here had them, I went to price a steel 16x8 they were 111$ and these were only 9$ more I'm sure you can find them cheaper online but they had them in stock so I went for it.

They are a nice wheel, way nicer than what I was looking for as a spare set of wheels.
