You might've lucked out and that nail not have gone deep enough into the tire to get to the other side. I would get a plug kit before pulling the nail though just in case

Typically if the disc portion of the patch can't sit flat inside the tire, a shop wouldn't patch it.

Like @Taco_Coma said it may not have gone all the way through. Since it is a screw, you can back it out to see. I wouldn't go much, just enough to see if you feel steel. That screw is close to the sidewall. Don't be shocked if places tell you it can't be fixed. They have gotten ridiculous on what can be fixed. Partly because they want to sell a new tire and partly because they claim they are afraid of being sued. I would have no problem fixing that.

You can use the plug kits that others have posted if you want to DYI, but I would go the patch from the inside route. Plugs are temporary fixes. They will do the job, but more risk by using them.

Find a small corner tire shop, and ask them if they can do a patch plug repair, Its the best repair and you'll be fine. These hold pretty close to the edge.

Although most tire shops won't repair a puncture that close to the sidewall (liability), I have. I put bean stubble through a brand new tire ( less than 200 miles on it) and repaired it-never had a problem. My puncture was closer to the sidewall than yours too.

    Lots, straight from the factory.
Discount tire will do it for free. They’ll plug it and patch it. The plug keeps the moisture out of the steel belts so they don’t rust. The patch makes sure it’ll never leak air. They do it right. Best part, they do it for free.

Looks like its too close to the shoulder for them to do it, most corporate companies have pretty safe limits for how close they will plug/patch. But i've plugged much closer and its been fine until i've needed to swap out the tires. Even if it fails, its not gonna explode. That's why you have a spare...

Picked up three roofing nails in three brand new Blizzaks on a trip this winter. Plugged them all. No issues since. I had planned to get them repaired when I got back to town but decided to see how long/if these plugs last. It's been four months without any extra drop in pressure.

I have plugged dozens of tires and never had an issue. It's not in the side wall. Its a no brainer.

I may be overly conservative and adverse to risk because I’ve been trained to be that way when it comes to life/limb/eyesight. Maybe you guys are right, it certainly seems that might be the case based on everyone’s anecdotes. Thanks for sharing, maybe I can have a little more confidence in my ugly ass repairs. Although the last one I did wouldn’t balance right ever again, so I replaced that tire so I could have a properly balanced tire again. It might have been fine to drive on though based on what y’all are saying, just bit of vibration (which tbf not like Duratracs balance well to begin with).

That's why there are dumb people and smart people in the world. It is right on the GOT DAMN edge. If it was a motorcycle no matter what I am replacing. If you ONLY drive around town and slow then you will be semi okay.. I would not want to trust that on the highway going 70

Lol, sounds like some of you have been dealing with some opportunistic tire shops. My tire guy would plug that 10 times out of 10 because he doesn't rip me off. If it was ON the sidewall it may be a different story but plugging this is not dangerous at all. :anonymous:

    Couple points.

Tire isn't losing pressure. The object hasn't penetrated into the inner tire.

Suggest to have a plug kit handy. Pull the object. If it leaks, then plug it. If it doesn't leak, then forget it and drive on. I'd still visit a tire shop to dismount the tire to inspect the interior.

As a 2ndary path, consider using a product like Ride-On inside the tire.

It depends on how long that nail is. If it's a long one and you've run it low on air it could have easily compromised the sidewall from within. Tire doesn't exactly look very new either at least by the pic? Personally I wouldn't want to risk a blowout while driving but that's me.

I had a plug fail once in a similar spot. It caused a flat one morning. NTB said they couldn’t patch it. Offered me road hazard protection plan on all four tires post rated four months after purchase for $80. They then put a new tire on. Try the dealer and see what they can do for you. 6k is less than an oil change worth of Mileage. If they won’t help you then I’d try a plug anyway.
