Navigation on 4th gen?

There is no "built-in" NAV anymore, just Toyota's cloud-based service that relies on data connection like Google and Waze. IMO, this sucks, because there are plenty of places with no cell service where you will be SOL trying to initiate a route. Of course, you will run into the same problem with Google Maps or Waze. IOW it is too bad that Toyota doesn't give us some onboard NAV capability with onboard data. But that might discourage people from paying the subscription fee after the 1-year free trial expires.

 

Sad if you can’t get built-in Nav even in a premium package. My map data is over 8 years old but still gets me to my destination with no subscription.

 

Nope. As far as I know it will be the same as on my 3rg Gen Tundra. Just Toyota Drive Connect and Remote Connect services. At least Toyota isn't taking away CarPlay and Android Auto like some other mfgs.

 

Toyota could charge a subscription for us to use our tailgates. Maybe I should delete this post. I don’t want to give Toyota any bright ideas (like the BMW heated seats subscription).

I hear ya. Also remember that the app based remote start is a subscription as part of the Remote Connect service. You can skip this and get an Accessorides or other PnP remote starter if and when they have them for the 4th gen Tacomas. Otherwise, you are SOL again, with only the factory fob... and that thing doesn't work for shirt.

 

Google Maps and Apple Maps both allow you to download sections of map for offline use later. Gaia GPS does as well. Waze does not. I’m a big fan of Waze but when I’m headed out to the boonies I use Gaia via CarPlay.

Of course, none of that solves the OPs problem without having a smartphone but it’s great for those who do. And there’s always paper maps and an odometer.

 

I know and I have done it many times. But you need to plan ahead for that, something that isn't always possible. And those downloads expire so you need to remember to do it again of you need the same area.

 

Does Drive Connect allow you to download maps so you can still navigate in areas without internet?
I just discovered yesterday that my one week old 4th Gen Taco has no navigation other than pay subscription, which also works from cloud so won't help at all in the boonies.
Bottom line question is what are people using to have downloaded maps available offline? Google Maps is terrible because you can only download small sections of maps at a time and then have to hope you got the whole route. The routing program in MapsMe is pretty lame as well.
Really searching for any options here that will provide offline support.

 

They'll figure out a way mess it up. Like charging for car play/android auto or something stupid.

Yep, Google is running Toyo... Now Toyo wants $15 per month to use wifi. On top of that, if you subscribe to Amazon, membership ($140 per year) plus music ($10 per month) we might as well just celebrate our good fortune - not...

 

I think it does, but I don't use that feature. I download the USGS maps and go from there. I'll often set a waypoint for where I need to turn to get to a specific spot.

 

I just bought my 2024. I have gone on a long trip using the Toyota navigation and Apple Car Play. I believe the Apple Car Play is better because it is more intuitive and directions are given sooner. I will let my subscription lapse and stick with Car Play.

 

Two apps that I use, Google Maps and Here We Go allow maps to be downloaded for offline use.

 

In case anybody else is trying to get offline capability using Google Maps, this is the process that I finally seemed to get to work:
1) Download all maps from the area you will visit onto your sell phone from GoogleMaps, this is not simple because you can't do it on a state size and the download area is not very adjustable.
2) When you have an internet connection, connect phone to truck via bluetooth and make sure Android Auto is active.
3) Open GoogleMaps on your vehicle with Android Auto and put in your route designation
4) If you've downloaded all the maps needed the route should appear.
6) Saving the route is a good idea to ease retrieving it but it seemed like with all the maps now available on the phone, GoogleMaps (thru AndroidAuto) will still plot routes for you when you're offline. I verified this by disconnecting everything from the internet and, as long as the route was within the downloaded area, new routes would be plotted.

This was my first success in getting this to work and I may not have described it well. If others have different experiences, or see errors, or don't understand what I did, please post!

I'm relieved to get this to work but disappointed at the hoops I needed to jump through. When on the road, I can toggle between AndroidAuto and the Toyota interface so it should work.

My wife's 2023 Tundra TRD Sport, bought in May-23 evidently came with a 10 yr trial Drive and Remote Connect according to what I've read and hers is still working. My 24 Tacoma, bought in Feb 24 came with 1 year trial and it just expired. I can't get a navigation map on the 14"display. I just get the following message, "Experience Drive Connect, Subscribe for the latest route and location guidance with Cloud Navigation, Destination Assist and Intelligent Assistant ".
I also can no longer use my cell phone to check on vehicle status ( tire pressure, doors locked, etc) or to remote start from my phone.
It appears I either do without these conveniences or pony up $16/month to be able to use the service.
Granted, conveniences are nice but apparently I've made it through life so far without them!

It is pure wisdom that Toyota abandoned the if not craptacular maps, expensive and slowly updated maps from pretty much every iteration like that. All the major mobile map apps and specialty ones have offline maps capabilities and Waze now caches much more. No more of that stupid problem where an automaker puts one carrier's receiver/radio and then when new protocol comes out sticks you with an upgrade cost or worse - does not have an upgrade path.

I've done travel where a fixed location only had satellite or MAN type wireless broadband with slow speeds but it lets you update your phone offline maps.

This is also superior for privacy.
