Time for an LS swap? Or a V8 from a tundra?

I hope that rebuilt motor comes with a good warranty....otherwise, you might be in the hole on expenses. I'm not spending your money but I would think twice about rebuilding and reselling.

Gasket kit, bearings, crank, water pump, incidentals, valve job, and incidentals, to rebuild, if your friend does the work for free your looking at close to $2000.

    I'd part it out.

Heads, valve covers, timing cover, injectors, fuel rail, water pump, coils, intake, fan and clutch, etc... Probably make more profit.

Ok so we made it home to Phoenix. Took up 14 hours to do a 9 hour drive! Of course that includes 2.5 hours sitting on the side of the freeway waiting for aaa towing. Battery was toast. Pretty sure the alternator is going to shit. Driving down the road at 65mph, about 2 hours into the drive, the battery light comes on. Then the ABS, and e brake lights come on. I pulled over to check things, and then tried to start it. Yeah the battery won't st the truck. It read 12.2 on my multimeter, but when my wife went to start it, it dropped down to 3.2. So called AAA roadside for a battery. Guess what? The service provider in that area doesn't do battery installation or delivery. I had to be towed to an autozone. Installed a new battery, and had the guy test the charging system and the starter. All good to go. Passed with flying colors. 3.5 hours later, the battery light comes on again. Then it goes off for a little bit, then on again. My wife and i play the game we ended up calling, "how long will the battery light stay on this time?!" Well got back to Fountain Hills, 20 minutes from home, and the lights are going dim, battery light has been on for like 4 hours, and it's done. ABS and e brake light are on, speedo is at zero mph, because not enough power to run it. No more power in the system. I pulled over, called an uber to take me to a local autozone. Get a new battery, uber back to the truck, and put it in the truck and drive the last 20 minutes home.

End of my nightmare............... or is it?

Nope!!!!! I have to get a new alternator!!!!!

Soooooooo, you blew up the motor, had a used motor put in and after that you had charging system problems? Do you know if they used your old alternator, or the one with the used engine? Or maybe they didn't tighten the nut holding the wire on the alternator.

I vote something is loose somewhere. A ground maybe but you are fine then you loose charging.

I did find the main ground wire in the ecm box was loose. I've tightened it down now.

Now see if you are still having charging issues before replacing the alternator. I would bet you are fine now. Grounds are just as important as power wires and many times overlooked.

Thanks. Drove it around today, and didn't have any issues at all. Hoping it stays that way. Lol

Since it was installed at a dealership, I'd check your engine oil level, on jobs like that, dealerships tend to over fill. Over filling can kill a 1GR-FE just as quick as under fill. Also, since it's an LKQ engine, sometime in the near future, sooner than later I'd drain the oil, check for debris with a flashlight and a magnet, and pull the lower oil pan (it's easy) and check it for any debris. LKQ has some serious FINE print as far as warranty.

    Just suggestions :)

I installed the engine with the help of 2 others, not a dealership. I'll be changing the oil this weekend, and will be doing exactly as you said

How much over filling of the oil will kill the 1GR?

Once the oil level is high enough to where the crank makes contact with the oil. I'd stay under 1/2" over on the dipstick for sure.

A good example, take a bottle of oil, cooking oil, whatever. Shake it up a whole lot. See the bubbles? That's called aeration, the oil gets super saturated and thinned out with tiny air bubbles, the oil loses it lubrication properties and also lowers oil pressure. That will kill any engine, 1GR-FE is very sensitive to oil pressure and also uses oil pressure for chain tensioners.
