My camper shell third break light keeps blowing my 10a stop light fuse. The shell third break light is connected to the driver’s side rear break light for power.

The shell was just installed in November, so the shop wants to install a fusable link to keep from blowing fuses. I don’t understand how that will help. Seems to me that the new fusable link would keep blowing fuses if it’s the correct amperage, which isn’t a solution. Can someone tell me how to fix my problem? thx in advance.

Does the light on the shell work? Is the wiring to the light good? Sounds like it’s shorting out the circuit. I highly doubt the camper shell is pulling enough to put the circuit over 10A, I doubled up on brake bulbs and used higher power ones and I still didn’t pop the fuse at all…much more likely you have a short in the shell’s 3rd brake wiring or the light itself.

Does it blow the fuse instantly or randomly?

The third brake light is an LED, it does work, and it blows the fuse randomly when the brake is depressed. It took a couple thousand miles for this problem to develop.

I’d say replace the fixture or trace the wiring if you can. Not sure how hidden the wiring is, may need to fish some new wiring up through it. It’s pretty obviously not related to pulling too much draw through the circuit.

A few years back, I read a thread here, a user who has a trailer and it has a similar problem. It happen every time the trailer is connected. It turns out that the trailer wiring is short.
Disconnect the wiring from your camper and test? Check the wiring on the camper for storage.
