Need help finding correct lugs!

Hello all,

I'm currently stuck trying to find the correct lug nuts for a replacement set of TRD Baja Wheels (PTR18-35090-BR).

I initially bought the recommended Toyota TRD lug nuts (PTR27-35100) for the set, but was told that they only got 4 turns on the stud and that was not enough to be secure. I ended up using the lug nuts that the shop recommended but long story short; they were too wide for the lug holes and essentially mushroomed the wheels into the studs. I had to take them to another shop to get them taken off and my studs replaced.

I have seen many users here running these wheels on their 3rd gens so I would think that my 2020 should be no different. Can anyone shed some light on the lug nuts they used for this set up and if it got enough turns to secure it to the truck (I think the recommendation from the shop was 6-7 turns)?

Did you buy them at the dealer? If they’re oem mag seat lugs your should be fine. I believe they make a mad seat with a short and long shank on them.

Thanks for the response, I did not buy them from the dealer. By any chance do you have a part # for those long shank lugs? Cant seem to find them online.

 

Thanks for looking that up. I did find that spec too and those are the ones I originally purchased, but for some reason they only got 4 full turns on the stud so the shop said they were not safe to use. That is why this is all so confusing to me. I'm starting to wonder if somehow my studs are shorter than they should be?

 

Strange, do you have spacers?
Or have you replaced your hub assembly (wheel bearings)?

Thanks for tagging them, I have actually messaged @RobP62 in the past to see what he is running but they seem to be the same exact ones as the PTR27-35100 trd lugs. I guess I should ask him how many turns he gets with those lugs if he even remembers.

 

I'm running McGard black chrome acorn style and their locks. The locks come with a key (socket) that I had to grind down to get it to fit in the wheel holes.

I know for a fact I get more than 4 full rotations of the lug nuts.

 

Thanks for the pictures, definitely helps! I'll definitely be trying these out. Weird how they have an FJ lug set and a Tacoma lug set but according to your post @Unchained 5150 was able to use the FJ ones.

Well, because they are interchangeable, and because these wheels were OEM on the 2007 - 2014 FJ Cruiser.

Are those the same lugs as the pic I posted that you sent me when I bought your wheels Rick?

 

Yes I didn't even catch it that that pic was actually from my wall.

What is weird for me is that those wheels look like an acorn seat and I thought all the factory oe aluminum wheels were mag seat. Someone correct if I’m wrong.

 

You are correct for all other wheels but these, they are the acorn seat.

P/N PTR27-35100 (I believe this is what @Unchained 5150 posted above) which if you don't care they are chrome, these are laser engraved which is nice.

In all my research though, you only need as much bite on the lug nut as it is round, meaning these studs are .5" so you only need .5" of bite. If you don't have a caliper, use a flathead screwdriver and touch the tip to the face of the wheel where the stud is sticking out, and slide your finger down the shaft of the screwdriver until it makes contact with the end of the stud, use that as a way to mark that distance, then measure how much screwdriver you have from your finger to the end.

 

Also, you'll notice in the figure I posed above, the Flange (Flat) nut has a portion below the washer that goes into the hole of the wheel. If you were to put acorn or bulge style nuts on those wheels, before you start to tighten them they would have some play and you could spin the wheel a little left and right. With the Flange style, as soon as the shaft of the nut below the washer engages the hole in the wheel there is zero spin.

The acorn and bulge style are the same except they need to be hand tightened a little further but it's almost immediate.
