    Hey all!

I’ve been adding all the goods to make my base model truck not so base model anymore. Started with intermittent wipers, some trim upgrades, and then decided to jump into cruise control.

Took apart the steering wheel, added the cruise switch and wire, and it doesn’t activate. Turns out my 2008 isn’t prewired from the factory!

Anyone ever wired up cruise control before that can tell me how to do it? I get the basics, need a wire from clock spring to ECM, and from ECM to gauge cluster… but which plugs do the wires go into? Oh yeah, it’s a 4.0l automatic transmission, I’ve seen plenty of write-ups for manual transmissions but they can’t be the same.

    Thanks for your time!
    Tyler

I have a base model access cab 2009 similar to yours, and i had to swap out the clockspring to get cruise control to work. Did you check how many pins your clock spring has? I needed the 84306-0E010 clock spring

I did look and find a thread somewhere that had a pic of the wires coming out of the clock spring that were needed, and mine did not have those wires. I believe it’s a green and a brown one if I’m not mistaken?

I’ve seen this as well, but here’s the thing. I understand that a wire must go to the ECM. But which plug? And then those plugs have spots for like twelve wires, so which spot on the plug does the wire go? Etc…

My 2011 MT was also not prewired, but the Rostra instructions posted above were very clear. Really the only difference between the manual and the auto is the clutch switch.

    UPDATE:

I ordered Rostra 250-2735, (Cruise ECM Harness for Non-Prewired) off of eBay for $111 shipped… overpriced in my opinion for a few wires, but it’s pretty much all I could find.

Don’t think I’ll have time next week to get into it, (tearing out/sodding my backyard) but when I do I’ll document it well so anyone out there with a 2nd Gen Tacoma with the 4.0L and auto trans that ISN’T prewired will have a good guide for setting up cruise control!

All the other parts I’ve used so far are OEM; the switch, pigtail inside the steering wheel, the little plastic cover the switch comes through…

    I’ll keep everyone posted!

Do you have steering wheel controls on the left side of the steering wheel for volume controls ?
If you do , chances are all you will have to purchase is the cruise control stock and plug and play .
If you dont have volume controls , I beleive you will have to upgrade to a newer clock spring .
Pop your steering wheel off and look at your clock spring .
The link above shows whats involved in safely replacing the clock spring and not accidently saying hello to your air bag

No my truck is as base model as base model gets. Plain steering wheel, no cruise control, no intermittent wipers (now there is). As far as I’ve researched, I just plug the cruise switch in, change it’s pigtail, and then wire the clock spring to ECM and ECM to gauge cluster and it’s good to go. Did I miss something?

For my first attempt, I’m going to follow Rostra’s install guide for the 07-08 Tacoma for part number 250-1731, even though I’ll be using part number 250-2735.

    https://www.rostra.com/manuals/250-1836_Form5367A.pdf

Basically just using two wires out of a kit that includes six wires, the brown ECM to clock spring wire, and the black ground wire.

According to this write up, these are the only two wires needed beyond the switch pigtail for the 07-08 Tacoma. Troubleshooting guide at the end says the cruise light should come on. If it doesn’t, I’m going to have to dig a little further.

Still not sure when I’ll get some time to tackle this, but should be by the end of this week.

Thanks for the pointer, I’ve read through that one already and the installs those guys are doing are for 09-13. The process is a tad different for 07-08 (which I have) and there’s a separate installation guide from Rostra. Plus those guys were doing manual trans, I’m auto so no clutch switch needed.

Hmmm, that is unusual. I have a 2007 2wd 4cyl Base Tacoma and the aftermarket CC Switch went in like a charm. How did you handle the horn wire? I did it here: https://www.instructables.com/Adding-Cruise-Control-to-a-2007-Tacoma/

Hard to imagine they wired it in in 2007, but not the 2009 model year. Where'd you get your CC Switch?

OK, nuff of that, you've likely solved it by now. I was looking for input on the Intermittent wiper upgrade and thought you might be able to advise me! Looking to get one off a junk vehicle rather than ebay or pay $180 or more to Toyota. any suggestions?

    Hi Tyler,
How did you get on with the cruise control? I am in a similar boat with a 2006 that isn't pre-wired.
If I may, you did say you'd keep us all updated and write a DIY for us, LOL!
    Would appreciate an update!
    Thanks

    Hey Timbo!
So I got the cruise switch/lever installed on the steering column, and the wire ran from the ECM to the cruise switch on the steering column. Cruise worked for a little while, then was intermittently working, and now doesn’t work at all. Never did attempt running a wire from the ECM to the gauge cluster for the activation light. At this point I’m thinking of disassembling it because it’s been more of a headache than I imagined.

Apologies for the very late response!
